Junkie Monkeys: Recently I had a very long discussion with a friend of mine who happens to be a game developer. We started discussing the downward trend in video game difficulty and why certain reviewers point out extreme difficulty as a negative.
It's not. Metal Gear Rising's difficulty made me rage like an angry wasp, but that game was still friggin' good. If the game is too difficult for you, it's your fault, not the game's fault.
I didn't find Metal Gear Rising all that hard except for the last boss. That boss was cheesy as hell.
Is Rising really that hard? The one game I've been hearing about lately that's pretty challenging is Bioshock Infinite's 1999 mode.
That 1999 mode is really hard, I got the joke about why they call it that. Reminds of all the hard games I played as a kid in the 90's. Hard as hell!
I'd have to agree, Demon souls kicked my ass in a good way.
We live a gaming era of instant gratification, people want to end the game when they want without the effort but this also cause the game become stale and its traded in before the first month is up. Microwave gaming at it's finest....
I love difficult games like demon souls cause they give you a challenge to see if you are the best.
Agreed. The punishing difficulty of Demon's Souls made me strive to get better at the game.
Well there's skill based hard like a demons soul which I love. Or theres poor design hard like bad camera, poor lock on, bad control scheme, things like that. That kind of hard can get so frustrating that it is definitely a con.
it became a con after there has been multiple generations of kids who got trophies for losing.
It's the casual gamers that really complain about difficulty. Then again there are different types of difficulty's. A game can be difficult simply because of bad game design and that's the only legitimate complaint regarding difficulty that I can accept.
The problem is simple not enough hard games on consoles, Console gaming unfortunately dictates Gaming trends, Most console games are easy, thats why when a semi hard, challenging not too hard game like darksouls comes around gamers think it is the hardest game ever.PC games tend to be more difficult,Diablo 3 makes Darksouls look like a chikdrens toy it really does. Thats why most PC games have high learning curves like Dota and Starcraft, because PC doesn't have many games that hold your hand. But now when a game has a learning curve it gets marked down by reviews thanks to console gamers being used to having everything straight foward.
What is a game if you don't stand a good chance of failure? Isn't that the whole point of a game... to overcome failure...to overcome challenges?
