GameStop has "at least 10 years of runway left" - Pachter

For years now, industry pundits have been predicting the death of video game retailers like GameStop. With The NPD Group continually showing retail sales declines in its monthly reports, the thinking is that digital distribution methods will eventually make GameStop - and its used business empire - all but irrelevant. In his latest investors' note, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said it'll be a long time before that happens.

10 more years of ripping off there customers

luoshuigui1137d ago

Gamestop rips off both customers and publishers, hopefully in 10 to 15 years digital download will be strong enough to eliminate this kind of middleman in gaming business and establish a direct transaction between customers and publishers.

i bought lair in 07 for 40 bucks and i tried to sell it a week ago and they give less than a dollar. WTF

FlameHawk1137d ago

@DirtyPimp, don't blame Gamestop, blame yourself and others who actually sell their games there.

So in what reality is GameStop completely evil and publishers are righteous?

While the Xenoblade / Metroid Prime thing was less than desirable, it DID put more copies in the hands of consumers, which will result in more people having a chance to experience them. This will also cause the prices to drop, which is a win for consumers. Not to mention GameStop has also worked with publishers to get used copies of games like Soul Sacrifice to come with online passes.

On the other hand, I doubt GameStop could get a reprinting of either game without Nintendo's approval, so they should get some shame / looked at funny for this. We've also seen a number of publishers / developers push for increased DLC, unfinished games (day 1 patches, freemium), and less rights for consumers.

This is one of those "lesser of two evils" situation and I rather have the GameStop around, than giving publishers / developers more power than they already have. We're honestly getting to the point where piracy is the "go to" excuse for a failure and used game sales is the "go to" excuse for decreased profits.

@dirty pimp

Cuz lair probably like $5 at gamestop so they can only give u like base credit of 80c or something.

Best buy probably give u 50c base credit.

U can't sell it anywhere else cuz its old and nobody wants it.

People should really look into everything that GameStop owns, and doesnt make known that they own. Check the stock of the company as well, they aint goin anywhere.

These days I take everything that Pachter says with a good grain of salt.

if Pachter says it that means that it's not gonna happen.

I am more conservative than that. They have about 3 yrs to change their business model. Physical sale will decrease quickly. If they could find a way to manage some kind of digital trading where they keep a piece of profit, they might actually get pass 10 yrs.
