Can Microsoft Turn The Xbox 360 Into A Wii?

Microsoft (MSFT) is developing its own version of Nintendo's Wii controller for the Xbox 360, says MTV News (really). A rather chatty source--who provided the illustration below -- tells MTV that Microsoft has been working on the new device since August, and should have it ready to go before the end of the year.

Sure they can. Will it appeal to the same kind of people ? Probably not.

Proper controller, better online, up to date graphics, and you can turn a Wii into a 360 :D

The 360's lineup of games garner the same kind of hype as the Wii or lack there of. Hey don't underestimate the power of Wiifit and Mario Kart!

2009 may end up belonging to the 360. If next year sees both a solid pack of both hardcore games as well as a new rush of casual games, we may see the tide turning towards the Xbox again.

My guess is MS will try to push a new image for the 360 at Christmas time and try to be the console king for Christmas. The Xbox has the potential to do so much more then the Wii could with a waggle controller, and I personally would love to see new solid party games.

Three reasons why the Xbox would frikkin own with a waggle controller
1) Graphically it has so much more potential then the Wii.
2) Online party games are something no one has really tapped into, and Xbox has MUCH more potential to own that arena.
3)Resident Evil 5 with a waggle.

If Xbox does come out with a solid waggle, and solid games, it would considerably lengthen its shelf-life. We may not see a 720 for a few more years yet.

You are missing the bigger picture bro, You can't assume Sony and Nintendo won't be doing any pushing at all. Also if anything, Sony and Nintendo have more casual offerings than Microsoft and Casuals are whats driving the market right now.

This is true. It will be interesting to see what Sony or Nintendo do in response.

I hear this a lot that the PS3 has this casual appeal. What casual/family friendly games are on the PS3 again?

Maybe the PS2 had it some with the huge library and the fact that it was the most popular console. But I don't see it with the PS3.

Ratchet? LBP? Sure 2 potentials but I would hardly call 2 titles enough to make a system casual/family appeal. If that was the case then MS is far ahead of that with games like Viva Pinata, Kameo and all it's family arcade style games.

Maybe the PS3 will have that casual appeal later, but right now and at least in the next year I do not see it.

Am I missing something?

"Maybe the PS2 had it some with the huge library and the fact that it was the most popular console."

You pretty much answer your own question. Some people will get the PS3 because of the good causual support it had with the PS2.

"Ratchet? LBP? Sure 2 potentials but I would hardly call 2 titles enough to make a system casual/family appeal. If that was the case then MS is far ahead of that with games like Viva Pinata, Kameo and all it's family arcade style games."

You are forgetting, Singstar, Echochrome, Agency ( Even though the Agency is an MMO, it's concept is to make it appeal to a wider crowd and not just your average MMO gamer), and also Free Realms which is and MMO aimed directly at the casual crowd.

"Maybe the PS3 will have that casual appeal later, but right now and at least in the next year I do not see it.

Am I missing something?"

This agree with but people are buying the console based on it's offerings ala the PS2.

if they make a breakaway style controller which i see them doing and the hardware problems get sorted, then i see the 360 having much better appeal in the future.

ChickeyCantor3478d ago (Edited 3478d ago )

decapitator,

actually, Singstar was released pretty early, but did you see a boost?

Even today casual people ask what a Ps3 is all about

And if the Ps3 sales are based on the amount of Ps2's that were sold, i say i don't see the resemblance

Mu5afir3478d ago

an ACT of DESPERATION from Microsoft, not a great business strategy.

Ureval3478d ago

Hmm, i dont really see how PS3 has the same appeal as the Wii. PS3 has huge install base with most people owning a PS2 most likely going to buy a PS3 over an Xbox, and thats where its future lies.

Xbox is still the newcomer and is only on its second console, battling it out with 2 other consoles that have been around for over ten years.

If Xbox comes out with this Xmote and continues to release the quality games it has since its launch, I see a lot more PC gamers willing to make the jump to Xbox if they have a controller thats as responsive as a mouse.

Yes, it is a blatant ripoff, and an obvious try at breaking into the Wiis casual market, but this may be just the thing the Xbox needs to overcome the obstacles that have been overshadowing it.

All I can say is I cant wait to replay games like Bioshock, Orange Box, if the Xmote is properly integrated, and Im looking forward to playing Left 4 Dead and RE5.

This may be the best dam n thing to happen to the Box.

Well the Wii is a TOY
So if the xBox 360 turns into a Wii it will be a BROKEN TOY! :D

bootsielon3478d ago (Edited 3478d ago )

But they should make a motion controller, and Sony should too. Once both PS3 and 360 have a "Wiimote" clone but with more buttons, the Wii will be useless, or pointless to own when you can have everything that the Wii offers and a lot more.
