“Survival horror games in recent years have gradually shifted from being about fear to being more about action, but since The Evil Within is a new title, there are no pre-existing fans to worry about satisfying,” he said. “Therefore it’s easy for me to get closer to the sort of balance of survival horror that I think is best. In that way, The Evil Within is being developed under peak conditions. Game fans are expecting horror, and they’re going to get it.”

Mikami explained that the game will feature a minimal soundtrack. “There aren’t many pieces of music. The air, the presence of an enemy, breath, footsteps. To exaggerate the feeling of really being in that location, we’ve kept the music to a minimum.”

Thee are the lines that caught my attention the most.

Shinji Mikami impresses me with every new interview.
I am enthusiastic about his passion to deliver a great horror experience, that we have much needed in the past few years.

Adding music is what a lot of inferior games and movies do to try to artificially make it better. Like how cheap food is loaded with strange chemicals that improve color and flavor. Imagine if every game came with a bottle prescription pills just so you could enjoy it.

The more I learn about this game the more I want it.

Shinji has always been a great dev. I remember resident evil 2 and 3 and 4 those were great games and also code veronica.he didn't direct all of them though but he created the. Series.great guy.up there with hideo kojima and hinorubi sakaguchi(father of final fantasy) and he seems to be really into kinect 2.

To me Code Veronica felt strange mainly because the controls felt more stiff like the original Resident Evil. Maybe because it was the first with actual 3D levels but I really wished that it had the same infrastructure as Resident Evil 3 Nemesis.

You are right, the controls where a bit clunky but i still enjoyed the game overall. The opening cinematics was great(claire running from the helicopter in a corridor)..those were the good old days. The fear effect was highest in resient evil 3 and 2 though then followed by code V and resi 4.

Shinji should never stop making games. Kinda crazy he left the funding of M$ though.

It's the enjoyment of independence since leaving Capcom that he probably likes. Your company, your rules.

Also, I don't think it's Microsoft's money that would have kept him around. The problem is their culture. We've seen more than once where individuals or teams wanted to leave Microsoft because of how they run things.

I don't think I've ever seen a developer at Nintendo or Sony that bought themselves out from being controlled. But we've seen it at Microsoft. Should be interesting what he decides to do next.

I remember when it was announced that he was leaving Tango, someone on N4G claimed that he was old and it was time for him to retire.

I couldn't help but laugh at the ignorance. Mikami (like most Japanese people), do not want to work for Microsoft, they want their games to be played by their fellow citizens, which means Switch, Playstation, and PC. But this fool couldn't comprehend that. 🤣

Was waiting for his return announcement, glad to see that he's back! Please don't make mobile games.

I hope it's still survival horror

They should build on what they did with Evil Within for a new IP and take notes from the Evil Within sequel with those open hub areas.

Wouldn't mind if it was like Resident Evil but with a vampire virus instead.

Yeah this man's skills need a new start to thrive. Hope he keeps doing what he loves. Wonder what his next project is.
