The NVidia Shield Is A Gorgeous Console With No Games

UPROXX - The NVidia Shield I’ve had for a day now. I’ve played games on it, I’ve tried it out, and I have to say, it’s gorgeous. It’s got a pleasing weight to it, it’s got thunderous speakers, it’s got a gorgeous screen, it’s got a great gamepad. All the elements for a great game system are here except… what’s the missing ingredient… oh, right. Games. (PC, Tech)

so technique, invida have to pay for 3rd party to incluse the remote play with Shield on PC game for it to work perfectly, and if they want a excluse game for this device they have to pay event more of that mount, what's a confuse

I think you's is a very confuse.
fermcr  +   363d ago
Oh boy. Nvidia launches a console but don't have any 1st party development studios to make games for it. Unbelievable!!!

Maybe someone should of told Nvidia that THEY NEED F**CKING GAMES TO SELL A CONSOLE... and with exclusives, even better.
Somebody  +   363d ago
Nvidia knew what they are getting into and probably well aware of the risks of making new consoles in a saturated market especially they don't have a long established partnership with a lot of game developers. Just look at their target: Android games and local streaming of PC games. They are not forcing anyone to make games for their console that actually can cater both Android and PC games. They don't have have to beg for developers to make games for the Shield because any Android games can be played on them with control issues being the only major thing to fix. Nvidia is just setting up a niche for themselves in a game market so they can expand on it in the future. Something called investment.

Now look at PS Vita and Wii-U. Both are the latest iterations of established handheld consoles with established support from developers for years, decades even. We should be seeing tons of games being pumped out regularly and yet we see a lot of those developers simply shuffling their feet around when asked about the handheld versions of their games. These handheld consoles shouldn't be facing problems like Shield and yet we hear their death announced almost every week.

I agree, Nvidia wants to make Android a serious gaming platform. The problem with that is that Android is also prone to piracy so I don't think a lot of devs want to risk releasing a high budget game for it. For now I have to admit that the Vita and Wii U are having trouble but I'm seeing good signs that good games are now being released for them on a monthly basis. The 3DS also suffered from game droughts but after a while things improved.
There's a lot of potential with the Shield, but I am very uncertain if that will be properly used.
taiyed80  +   363d ago
@fermcr - that's one ignorant comment, dude. Do you even understand what this device does?

You don't use first party studios for android console. They just tell existing android devs to put a controller scheme onto their games, and viola, it works with shield.

Games? All nvidia brags about is benchmark scores with their latest GPU's...

Arrogance. Whoever is in charge, doesn't actually "understand" the business, they are the person in charge though so " they make the decisions"..

Just a theory, but yea I have a feeling there are a few NON-gamers making decisions over there.
swishersweets20031  +   362d ago
its the same company that says they wont make ps3 aftermarket controllers because "they dont feel the system is good enough".. that should give you a clue on how their business is run.

SHIELD is destined to FAIL from the get go with how it natively works! it will have a better appeal if and only if Steam is supported natively on the device and can be played anywhere, not just streaming from your pc and limited to the same network.

I can't believe they actually created this monstrosity. How could anybody think it would be a good idea?
ginsunuva  +   363d ago
It's a good idea for PC streaming and soon-to-launch GRID streaming.

Android games,... For some reason every company thinks it's some giant bandwagon.
badz149  +   363d ago
streaming pc games is a good idea but it's a RETARDED idea if it only work on the same network your pc is which is only AT HOME!

just think about it. you have SHIELD and you're at home. then, you feel like playing some pc games. what would you do? play it on your awesome pc on big monitor or tv at high resolution with your beloved kb+m OR run the games on your pc and stream it so you can play it on the heavier-than-usual-controller SHIELD on small screen, 720p and a controller?

it can play Android games too, you say? you don't already have a smartphone for that? and oh, ever heard of Bluestacks?

I was looking forward to this device, the original benchmarks they showed were fantastic looking.

But after seeing all the recent once's they completely lied out of there butt, the ones they released showed that it barely increased 20fps over the Tegra 3 chips.
Indo  +   363d ago
Why. I mean 3DS and Vita are on the market, and I honestly don't see the purpose of Nvidia's Shield. People or gamers in gerneral weren't asking for this. Waste of money and time.
aliengmr  +   363d ago
You are assuming that they're competing with the 3DS and Vita.

The idea of streaming games locally appeals to me, and as far as I know, the 3DS and Vita have no intention of allowing me to do that.

Shield may not be able to do it perfectly yet but you have to start some where. Maybe they strike gold, maybe not, but is how it is with new tech.

PC gamers rather play their games on a full blown beastly PC. Not on some portable device.

Well, a fitting song for the system:

It's an android console that also streams PC games if you have a 600 series graphics card...that's it. That's all it's ever been portrayed as, right from the start....what exactly were people expecting when they bought the thing?

Same with Ouya....plenty of people bought the thing and then started complaining about what it offered. Did they not research the damn thing before buying it?
taiyed80  +   363d ago
Yep. Unrealistic expectations, without even really understanding what this device offers.

Mofos, ima wait for the tegra 4 tablets, all this will come to tablets.very impressive wot it can do tho.or ouya with t4,not fallin for the dual core 1gb scam even if ouya is dirt cheap lol.to much money on all these devices when u gotta have the latest
tubers  +   363d ago
It's a start.

While this specific device won't really do "much", it could be a "trend" (tactile mobile gaming for iOS/Android) to make the VITA less relevant specially with its pace.

Emulators are doing good and the PPSSPP is getting better on Android.
boikanyo  +   363d ago
why nvidia ddnt think of making a home console lyk xbox 360 and ps3 not android console...n i know if nvidia could make a hme console im 110% sure that their console could be more powerful than nxt generation console..but oh! They tuk the wrong way by creating android console.
skydragoonity  +   363d ago
What were dey thinking?
TABSF  +   363d ago
This device has about 4 times the performance of any hand-held console, will play all if not the vast majority of Android games.

Additionally it will have full access to my Steam library of 395 Games playing at maximum settings streaming from my High-End PC that I built myself.
NewsForge  +   363d ago
Only games that appear on the Nvidia experience app can be streamed. That's 97 PC titles only.

It has plenty of games. You just have to stream them from your PC capable of doing it.
sourav93  +   363d ago
From all the reviews I've watched/read, the streaming function on the device is good, but not great. There is a latency issue; games like Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider or Skyrim won't be a problem, though games where reaction is key e.g CoD, BF, etc, it won't be the best of ideas to use the Shield. Hopefully they're able to fix all of these kinks sooner rather than later.
Agent_hitman  +   363d ago
I would be more impressed if Qualcomm released a Tablet+gamepad console powered b Snapdragon 800. It's a lot more faster lol.
