The Pains of an Ageing Gamer

Eskimo Press: "I have been playing games since before I can remember. Befittingly, the original Game Boy was the first game system I owned and played. Oh the days when all I needed was Super Mario Land, Tetris, Mega Man 2, and Ducktales in my oversized official Game Boy hard case wherever I went. As time went on and I got more consoles and more games, and got better at gaming, my passion for the medium just continued to blossom. Back in those days I hadn’t a care in the world, and I could play games for hours on end to my heart’s content. Boy, do times change." (Retro)

I know exactly how the author feels. It's a shame that you can buy everything but time.

Yep, same here

Ive started biulding a collection of n64 games this summer, pretty easy console to collect for. Even though it was always my favorite console, there were some amazing games i never played until this summer, like majoras mask, ocarina of time, and the world is not enough(really underrated imo). Ive enjoyed playing older games a lot more than newer games, though I have to admit it took a while for my eyes to adjust to that low resolution again.

You said it well, I have so many games sitting in their case and all I'm missing is the time to play them, and some require a good chunk of time.
Sometimes, I'll even revert to something casual bc I need my gaming fix and I just can't put two hours in a quality RPG.
Owning a psvita and 3ds surely makes it easier to game.

Not enough of the industry maturing with your taste. If at all.

As long as there are buyers there will be products. Gaming is in fact slowly maturing.

See the rise in adult themed gaming or family entertainment products.

Edit: take a game like Catherine. I don't see 8-year old me playing that game.

It also has something to do with getting older.
A human child is basically a drug factory, being constantly loaded with hormones makes everything a very pleasant experience.

As we age the hormones in our body became fewer and slower, and thus washing out the way we experience things.
This is why many adults enhance their experiences with alcohol, or heavier stuff.

Super Mario 1 was more hardcore than 99.9% of today's so-called games (read: interactive movies with 0 difficulty gimmick-filled politically correct POS).

Either you're over exaggerating, were not good at SMB or you haven't played as many games as you think.
contradictory  +   543d ago
that's a bit too harsh...you're just searching the wrong places.

How do you live your life being so negative??
Also, it seems that you haven't played any game since SMB
JohnCartenper  +   543d ago
No, I never said there are NO hard games as in "difficult".

But difficulty is meaningless if you respawn automatically with NO consequence at all.

A hardcore difficult game is Don't Starve.

Pretty easy, but if you die the game deletes your savegame

i don't have nearly that much time for gaming that i used to
but i have to put things into perspective sometimes.
zalanis  +   543d ago
What's with the word "ageing" hope that was written intentionally, cause damn if it wasn't. Just incase though, it's "aging" not "age-ing" unfreakin real.
zalanis  +   543d ago
Never mind, I had no idea people outside the USA drop the "E" my apologies

I opened a video game store 15 years ago so I could play more games....Now I have a great store, but I play video games less than ever. LOL

I get a moment here and there to enjoy my favorite old titles and some great new ones. it's just about budgeting time properly :)
