XPSTAR Previews: Ryse - Son of Rome

The Can't-Miss Swords and Sandals Xbox One Exclusive

In movieland, the historical ‘epic’ is always sure to live up to its name. Battles on a remarkable scale, a melodramatic subplot or two involving the general’s tedious love interest, blood-leaking, bone crunching gore... these are the Gladiators, Troys and Kingdom of Heavens of the world. A fine recipe for an ambitious action game with a capital ACTION, all in all.

The classical era, alas, isn’t one that makes it into video games very often. For cinematic battles of the swords and sandals era, we have the lofty likes of The Creative Assembly’s Total War franchise. This strategy war sim has seen us leading conquests across feudal Japan, the Medieval world, and the ancient realm of Rome: Total War (among others). 2004‘s Rome was the first title in the series to lend actual, non-hideously-eye-melting 3d-modelled soldiers to its battlefields, but it’s looking rather decrepit now.
