Dragon’s Crown is VanillaWare’s most expensive project

Dragon’s Crown might still be two weeks away from North American shores, but it’s available at retailers starting today in Japan. And to commemorate the game’s release, VanillaWare founder and lead artist George Kamitani has taken to Twitter with some new artwork and information.

“Dragon’s Crown is actually the first title our company has developed that has gone over the 100 million yen (around one million dollars) wall in costs,” he said. “I’m very thankful to have met the release date without problems.”

The Atlus-published action RPG is due out for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita on August 6 in North America and this fall in Europe. (Dragon's Crown, PS Vita, PS3)

A $1m budget isn't that hard to believe. I mean just take a look at their games. They're great games, obviously, but they don't seem like they'd need too big of a budget to create. This news doesn't really surprise me.

I really wish this game was cross buy. I'm having a tough time deciding which to get, lol.

I feel your pain. I'm almost 100% on getting the Vita version though. I just want to hear some reports that the Vita version didn't suffer from any compromises.

Especially since I just finally bought a trigger grip for Vita. It's less portable, but daaaaammmnnn it's comfortable.

heard there is slowdown on Vita when 10 or more characters are on screen at once but its not too bad, also heard it looks absolutely stunning as well. I'm pretty sure its the same graphics for both but even if it isn't I am getting the Vita version. This game is perfect for pick up and play style as well as long sessions and the Vita will allow for both.

Also I'm getting Xillia same day so it will absorb my PS3 time while this takes vita time.

And it's looking like their best work as well. Will buy on Vita and PS3.

Well go VanillaWare! They found their way of making games. They make the best 2D adventure games today in an age where they shouldn't exist anymore and they shouldn't stop making them either.
