Resident Evil (1996) Is One Of The Most Important Games Ever Conceived

CGUK:
"A crouched, broad, human-like figure grunted inexplicably. The stomach-turning snorts came to a sudden halt. A brief moment of silence swept the room like a graceful Swallow. The figure meticulously turned its suspended, lifeless limbs until its origin was revealed. A citrine, leathery, cracked blanket matted the beast's decadent skull. It's eyes of the darkest abyss severed any chances of hope I had left. Situated below the drained relic of a nose was a tightly-drawn mouth, sucked of any life, oozing with a red humanly fluid.

The beast snarled.
There was no way out." (Culture, Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Director's Cut, Resident Evil: REmake, Retro)

Nice write up on a classic game. Reading your feature really took me back to my first time exploring that ominous mansion in 1996.

Alone in the Dark anyone!

Alone in the Dark was also a very important franchise at one time. I also think that some of the point and click horror story PC Games from the 90s were extremely influential in the gaming narrative we play today.

You just made me think of a point and click horror game I used to play as a child. For the life of me I can't remember what it's called. All I remember is a scary room with a piano, the color scheme was mostly black and white.

Alone in the Dark was a great horror game (one of my favorite point and click games of my childhood). But it didn't have the cultural/innovative importance that Resident Evil did. Resident Evil really brought survival horror to the forefront of gaming. I miss how popular that genre was. :(

There were so many innovative and revolutionary games in the late 90s. Silent hill, mgs, goldeneye, mario 64, rainbow six, ocarina of time, half life, the list goes on and on.

Still havent played this gem. Ill probabpy grab it on my vita.

When I was younger (4-6years old I think), I remember walking downstairs and my Dad was playing this game on a Sega Saturn.
The moment I went downstairs the iconic scene where the Zombie turns around at the beginning of the game plays.

My parents flipped out when they noticed I was downstairs and started panicking trying to turn the console of so I wouldn't be traumatized lol.

I indeed had many nightmares but this game is still a staple of the survival horror of the franchise.

Too bad Crapcom decided to absolutely RAPE the franchise...

Remember it like it was yesterday. The first 15 minutes stained my brain...and the game just got better and better, sorta like a certain ps3 game that's out right now.

Resident Evil was too hot for its time, & scary!
I remember I used to try to get all my friends & family to see that hallway scene when the dog pounces through the window. Their reactions were like me reliving it for the 1st time, & it was priceless!
Sigh...
