Hands-on with upcoming Vita shooter Killzone: Mercenary - Pocket Gamer

So far, a great Vita FPS has failed to materialise. There's been the good (but could be much better) Resistance: Burning Skies, and the totally awful Call of Duty: Black Ops - Declassified (which you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy). And that's about it.

With Killzone: Mercenary, Sony has another shot at cracking the FPS nut, and if the preview build we've been playing is anything to go by it's got a good chance of succeeding.

I disagree with the opening statement here. The campaign of Resistance and the Single-player missions of CoD Black Ops Declassified are actually pretty decent .....especially for a handheld system. The multiplayer for both works and was actually a little more than I expected for a handheld multiplayer shooter....sure the maps and the player counts are smaller than their console brothers, but they do work.
However, I am hoping that Killzone: Mercenary is the shooter that matches up to a console version as far as multiplayer is concerned for this handheld. We will know soon enough.

If the Vita is the more expensive of gaming handhelds standards need to go up. The capabilities for this device is leagues ahead of other gaming handhelds and shouldn't even be compared to them. KZM proves that the Vita has what it takes. It's just that some developers couldn't be bothered to put in the effort because of the "it's just a handheld" mentality.

I agree with you Capt. I was impressed with the visuals and gameplay of Uncharted Golden Abyss, but there was no multiplayer there and the story was a little lacking. And I truly enjoyed the gameplay on CoD: Declassified (especialy after the patches) and Resistance: Burning Skies.... I truly hope that Killzone: Mercenary is the be all, end all shooter for Vita. It is still relatively early in the life cycle for this system....maybe time and true effort is all the developers need to make some all around quality games in regards to story, gameplay, multiplayer, and graphic fidelity.
