‘Dead Space’, ‘Shadow of the Colossus’, and ‘Deus Ex’ Movie Updates

Despite a few successes peppered over the course of several decades, the general consensus is that video game movies are not only a risky proposition for studios, but most of them are lacking in quality. However, we might be in the midst of a changing of the guard, so to speak, as game developers take a more hands-on role in video game movie development (a la Marvel Comics). (Culture, Dead Space, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Shadow of the Colossus)

So let me get this straight...

For Deus Ex we are getting Scott Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill people who have never really explored outside the horror genre...and I mean the bad horror genre with the cheap scare tatics.

For Dead Space we are getting a crappy writer who let alone has never probably played Dead Space but did the god awful Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li film. Way to go EA, being cheap as always and getting a crappy director/writter...well done.

then

For Shadow of the Colossus we are....actually wait....Shadow of the bloody Colossus. What the fudge...why are they even doing this in the first place.

Jesus Christ, they make it out like starting it in house is good for the film but as soon as it leaves their control it will be turned into crap and butchered. It's bound to happen, go along with what the developer says to make them happy and then by the time it's finished all the developers input will be tossed outside the window.

Hollywood and these developers are morons...hell NaughtyDog have begged Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to do an Uncharted film numerous times, yeah ND did, not Sony.

I know, right?

It still boggles my mind that for Dead Space, motherfreaking Dead Space, we're getting Justin Marks, the guy who penned Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. I actually sat down and made myself watch that movie in its entirety and I still have the scars from when I tried to claw out my eyes...

Shadow of the Colossus will be the most depressing movie of all-time.
And the most beautiful, if its done well.
zerocrossing  +   420d ago
Sadly the chance of that happening is borderline impossible, we only ever get video game movie adaptations that exploit the source material not attempt to respect or enhance it.

In this case, it will neither be beautiful nor done well, because it's being made by the writer of the live action Chun Li film, which is a giant turd.

I think zack Snyder be a good candidate to direct Shadow of Colossus. I feel this movie needs the 300 treatment.

I'd love to see a SotC movie! But how are they going to mainstream solitude, Argo and the dual wonder/horror of the Colossi?
Master-H  +   420d ago
Shadow of the colossus movie would be lame, how are they gon film the hero kill all the colossus one by one ? 2 hours won't cut it if it's gon have a good fighting scene with each one , unless they gon skip most of them which will be lame.
Just use the money to make The Last Guardian come faster Goddamit !

Concerning Games going to movies.

I think we will have to wait 15 to 20 years when the game stories and game-art are generally understood and known by the general public. We also had to wait a lot of years for comics to be generally accepted as also an art-form with a underlying deep human stories, interesting science, new philosophies etc etc

With mortal combat being probably the only successful and lucky achievement in the game department for now I think I prove my point

First there were Ancient History books. Then came the horror and ghost story books. AFter that scfi story books .And after that super hero comic books
.

In movie business I think you can see the same trend going on concerning success. First the BEN-HUR alike movies became big and many, then there were horror movies which became big and many (frankenstein, the thing etc etc)
then there were sci fi movie which became big and many.
(star wars, star trek etc etc)
only after that the comic book movies became big and many.
(Superman was big in the late 70's..but really the only big one...much like mortal combat in the 80's)
And superhero-comic book movies are at their peak right now.
They won't go away for the coming 10 years and most of the money and talent will be there.

Maybe we'll be lucky with one good game-movie in the coming 10 years. But don't count on it.
The only fast way for games is to develop a good comic or reading-book franchise (like MS (actually BUNGIE) tried with HALO..but sadly failed till now). Only then the succes-rate of getting a good game movie would probably be much higher. I don't see 343 picking up on HALO as BUNGIE did. so the halo universe is dead and gone. and a that big HALO game movie will never come (an example).

in the sony and nintendo game department I do not see any big movements trying to force and blend these 2 media (game and movie) together.

Don't get me wrong..I'm still buying a PS4. But I do acknowledge that Microsoft or the MS game developers are trying harder to get this done (Spielberg) And thats a good thing for us all. But I still think they will fail. It is just to early.

The day everybody's wife knows who masterchief (HALO),kratos (god of war), solid snake (metal gear solid) markus fenix (gears of war)are... (just like mickey mouse, superman and the term UFO...)

Thats the day we can expect great and many quality game movies.

Fumito Ueda couldn't possibly let anyone make a Shadow of the Colossus film could he?

The sad thing about that is that dozens of morons would flock to the cinema to watch it without having played the game, and the film would definitely suck.

Actually, could someone start a petition to stop the SotC film from being made? They won't make it if they know it'll be a fail.

Maybe NeoGAF could do something.

Why turn a good 10 hour story into a crappy 2 hour one that we've already seen the 10-hour version for?
