Sony’s Free To Play DriveClub Getting “New And Updated” Demo Next Month

Blame the track, blame the environment, but it was hard to get too much of a grasp on what the game was all about from such a limited taster. Thankfully, Evolution have continued to push on, and there’ll be a “new and updated” demo shown off at Gamescom next month.

So...the game is being released in Beta form? I mean, how are they gonna complete enough of it by the release date? Just wondering...

I guess it's cool if it's free, but a retail version needs to be more complete if it's coming out this year.

Enemy3931d ago (Edited 3931d ago )

Isn't it funny to see Xbox One enthusiasts compare their "top" exclusives to a F2P game on PS4? :)

It probably is going to release in beta considering I don't understand how they'd complete the other 65% by PS4's launch. Or maybe they will. That hasn't been confirmed.

Donnieboi3931d ago (Edited 3931d ago )

Edit: Yeah, that has nothing to do with what I said, but I was just wondering if this is a Beta or not. Kinda wishing they put GT6 on PS4 (enhanced next-gen version, as well as PS3 version) instead right about now.

georgeenoob3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

Only 35%? They got 4 months left, and 65% left to go. Have fun with that!

In all seriousness the devs will probably just get lazy with it considering it's free. Actually, it seems like they already are getting lazy.

kwyjibo3930d ago

@Enemy - I guess you find it "funny" that Sony enthusiasts are comparing GT with F2P too?

3930d ago
lcsapo3930d ago

Because the 35% version was shown on the E3 Nobody knows what level they are at the moment. There isn't any indication at the moment what the 35% means. I don't know too much of software development, but I think many things like tracks cars UI are done parallel and those could have been ready before the E3 just simply not included. The major question which remains how much of the remaining 65% is the engine it self. Are we gonna see better visuals? Better control? Better physics? Sure the 4 moths left is damn short, so I hope they are much further than the E3 demo. Anyway, I'll see it with my own eyes on the Gamescom! Yeah baby!

grimmweisse3930d ago

@george,

Yes, only 35% complete, as opposed to all those completed next-gen games we've seen.....oh wait....! Those are also still in development.

You have no idea how development works. You just like to find convenient ways to troll. Developers work up to last given time possible to make sure they release the best product they can.

So from what we've seen from Drive Club so far, means the next build to be shown will be a great improvement.

And some education for you muppet, the free version of the game is for PSN+ members, and it not the complete game, you don't get all the tracks and cars, if you want the full title then you have to pay. Like KI, one character free, access to all modes, if you want all the other characters you need to pay. So before trying to be the smart boy in class, get your facts in order you tit!

Angeljuice3930d ago

@georgeenoob

The demo was of code at 35%. That demo may have been ready since the February reveal (we simply don't know). There are two main reasons why this may have been the case:

1) They were too busy making a launch game (New IP) to produce an updated demo for E3.

2) The game looks so amazing that if they had shown it in all its sublime glory, nobody would have seen there was more than just great graphics.

Now I'm a big fan of the PS4, but even I think number 1 is more likely. Just because their demo shown at and after E3 was 35%, it doesn't mean their game code wasn't at 75% (or higher) at the time.

We'll see how far they've come at GC.

MariaHelFutura3930d ago

When Evo studios first showed Motorstorm it didn't look great, it came out and looked amazing. Pacific Rift was first shown and it didn't look great, it came out and looked amazing. I have zero doubt Driveclub will be any different. KZ2 was the same situation.

dantesparda3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

There you have it folks, KI devs are going to get lazy developing KI because its free to play, as a matter of fact, they seem to be getting lazy right now. That's the new MS fanboys talking point (and remember KI is coming from a D team)

sarcastoid3930d ago

You guys realize that just because they showed a 35% complete demo at e3 doesn't mean they were only 35% complete at that time, right? Good lord

Sevir3930d ago

It's not a traditional free to play! Lol... It would be free to play if the game was only releasing in PS+... Calling it Free to play is wrong when there is a full retail version of the game launching day and date the console.

Killer instinct is free to play.

Warframe, DCUO, Planetside 2... Those are all free to play...

Driveclub is just being offered to you like any other PS+ game for subscribing.

It's a full on multi-million dollar big budget game from a top tier studio.

Calling Driveclub free to play is like calling infamous 2, uncharted 3 or LBP:Karting Free to play because it's offered on PS+.

A fun fun fact... Free to Play games like Warframe, DCUO, Planetside2 etc; Are NOT BEHIND the pay wall of PS+ to enjoy online...

Driveclub is... So this conclusion that the game is some small psn/plus exclusive is false, especially when Sony hasn't even detailed what's being had in the PS+ edition... It's just an incentive for getting people to enjoy online play with Driveclub since PS+ is required to play online retail games.

abzdine3930d ago

Updated demo to me Sound like a demo from the latest built cause what we've seen so far is made from pre-alpha code.
The demo should be ready for gamescom and that's good cause I'm gonna be there to try it for myself

Sharingan_no_Kakashi3929d ago

Oh spare me. Apart from Knack, Forza 5 has got to be the most non next gen game i've seen so far. Forget the fake lighting. forget the fake shadows, forget the fake clouds, forget that it still doesn't have day night cycles, forget that it doesn't have weather. The engine that it uses can't even render the small environments completely. Watch any gameplay of the cockpit view, look in the rear view mirror and you'll see that as you pass stuff it dissappears off the map. That's a last gen trick, my friend. And people are praising it for running 60fps. Heck it's easy to process 60fps when you don't have to process anything else.

It's a F2P so you'll probably see a ton of updates or DLCs

HammadTheBeast3930d ago

It's not free to play, it's a retail game with a "demo" version for free on PS+ with less cars, tracks.

M-M3930d ago

@HammadTheBeast,

"It's not free to play, it's a retail version for free on PS+ with less cars, tracks."

Fixed.

claterz3930d ago

Is that going to be the excuse when this game comes out unfinished then?

its not a free to play game for a start, people without Plus have to pay full price. it's like saying BF3 is free to play on PS3 because its part of the instant game collection. DriveClub is rushed and its missing features that should have been there, stop defending it!

brave27heart3930d ago

Driveclub is rushed?

You know this how exactly?

Until the game is out dont judge it.

claterz3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

brave27heart
I think it's rushed because they are having to patch in massive features that should have been there from the start, they openly said that the game was 35% compete just a few months back, and they aren't even reaching 60FPS. Racing games this gen are 60FPS so I don't know why DriveClub can't do it. If Forza can do it on weaker hardware, then there's no excuse for DriveClub IMO.

For the record I love Evolutions games, I have bought every Motorstorm game (even Vita)and platted 2 of them, I'm just saying the game seems to have a long way to go until it can compete with other racers. I'd rather them delay it just to get it to the 60FPS mark, it would make such a difference for an arcade racer.

At least you replied unlike 16 other people :)

nnodley3930d ago

Hey Claterz can you please link to where Evo said they have to patch in features on day one? I bet you can't because that was Turn 10 and Forza 5 that has a day one patch to add drivatars and other stuff.

Evo has never once said they have to have a day one patch to add features. And does anybody really know how development works anyway or are you all gonna act like you do. I sure as hell don't so I'm not gonna act like I do.

Actually I just looked it up and all I see is them saying that they will probably patch in weather effects after day one so it could be anytime. They also said they are gonna tweak and refine the game for a year or two.

claterz3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

nnodley
Well you just said it, Evo are planning to patch in weather effects after launch, as well as damage effects (although I think cars will have slight damage at launch). What the hell is wrong with you people? lol. Just sit back and let developers release games that are missing features that should have been in the game at launch. It's funny because the people defending this are probably the same ones who criticize Forza for not having weather effects and night racing. This gen was bad enough with post release patches adding fixes, but to leave something as big as weather effects to be patched, it just seems like the kind of thing that they would have meant to have in the game at launch, not after it. It also annoys me how people are using the F2P excuse when this game is not even close to being free to play, it's a full price retail game UNLESS you pay for Plus.

I do remember them saying that they were planning on supporting the game with tweaks and refinements over the first few years, but I don't really know what they mean by that so I can't complain. if they mean fixing bugs, glitches and stuff then obviously that's not ideal but hopefully they're talking about adding new content and features like what happened with GT5.

As I said though, I love Evo and I'm still looking forward to this game but after the promises they made at the Feb PS4 reveal it just doesn't seem to live up to the expectations and doesn't hold up well against other next gen racers imo. I wonder if they'll be able to patch in 60FPS lol, if it's not 60FPS it's a no buy from me, it's supposed to be a next gen game FFS.

Dee_913929d ago

@claterz
Do you really know what your talking about or are just typing because your bored?

No current gen console game is running at 1080p and 60fps.GT5&GT6 are around 1280x1080 scaled up to 1920x1080 60fps, forza 4 is 720p 60fps,all nfs are 720p 30fps, grid1&2 , dirt 1-3 all 720p 30fps.
How is weather a feature that should be in the game at launch? You should read those articles again. If weather was something they wanted to add from day one it would be in the game come launch but since it wasn't and now that people want weather they will add it.Later on.
Theres a huge difference between adding weather later on and not having weather at all.
If you think improving a game post release is a negative then you need to go back to ps2 era kid.

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 3929d ago
Colzer013931d ago (Edited 3931d ago )

That's why it won't coming on 60FPS, not a design choice, but they didn't really have much time lol

Even the damage effects won't be at launch LOL
http://www.vg247.com/2013/0...

HammadTheBeast3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

So is the lack of dynamic weather, lighting, shadows, and clouds also a "design" choice?

Also, they've said they're aiming for 60 fps.

If, even at 35% complete it looks decent (and it's always the case that graphical polish is added later in development), let's wait until release to compare.

SuperLupe3930d ago

Wow funny how "dynamic weather" is the most important element in a racing game now ... people sounding more and more desperate.

I would have thought that graphical fidelity, frame rate, car physics etc would be what PS4 gamers look for the most in a racing game ... NOPE its the dynamic lighting, cant wait to drive those sun rays !

Oh and last time I checked Forza 5 still graphically blew Driveclub out of the water, keep you dynamic lighting boy, I'll take all the rest :)

grimmweisse3930d ago

Did you even read the article you linked?

"“We’re not making Burnout, but the cars do damage, they deform and all that kind of stuff, so you are effectively scuffing up million pound supercars,”.

And it's more positive than negative. "The game that you play day one on PlayStation 4 is not going to be the same game you play a year down the line because it will have evolved a lot. We’re keeping the development architecture of the tracks etc very much open. We’re not closing off anything just yet."

Meaning they will support the game for some time, adding in features and making the for an overall better game.

Ju3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

Of course environmental accuracy has an impact on driving as much as physics accurate simulation of a car. The type of pavement (asphalt, gravel, dirt, cracks, inaccuracies), water, wind - yes sunlight - has an impact how you drive. Keeping the foot on the pedal while sun flares limits your vision should have an impact - because you need to be more careful. Of course it is part of a racing game.

BTW: So is damage - but it's cosmetic (simply for an arcade racer it's probably more important to finish a race) but at the same time it's still fun seeing how you can trash your car during the race.

Thegamer413930d ago

What I understood from that is they built a working demo for people to play on an old build (when they were at 35% completion). It does not mean they are at 35% into the developing process right now so they will make a new demo at the stage they are right now.

TIER1xWOLFPACKx3930d ago

Atlast someone that has some brains. Just because they shown what they had at e3 was 35% doesn't mean they were at 35% completion at that time. They have to plan months ahead to create a demo that demo shown at e3 was probably in creation 2months or so before e3 to make sure it's ready.

It's simple when you understand what is said and what people are making out of it.

The demo was of a build which was 35% complete. Logic translation would be that the demo was put together at a time when the game was only 35% complete. This date was not yesterday, E3 or a week before E3. Demo builds get usually worked on long before their release.

Considering there is an updated demo being released which is further along and possibly a better representation of the final product, I don't understand why people are so adamant on flaming this game and ignoring any factual information released about the demo or game.

it's like listning to a bunch of people who are oblivious to anything around them.

Aceman183930d ago

Its n4g that right pretty much tells ya that its filled with irrational people who chose not to go by facts, and believe whatever the hell they want.

For me the game looks like its coming along good can't wait to see the new demo at gamescon

Cmk01213930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

To me the free to play model sucks. It's always pay to win, like world of tanks, like Spartacus, etc if the changes are anything more than cosmetic they make it pay to win. And in that case is rather they release a polished 60 dollar game putting folks on level playing field instead of a quasi polished game they are still working on in which to remain competive I need to pay for crap over time ultimately costingmore than 60 bucks or grind out 5 times as hard as everyone else paying. It's a crap PC model IMHO and I know everyone probably
Disagrees with me
And that's cool.

JP13693930d ago

What's that have to do with Drive Club, which isn't F2P? Despite what the headline says, only a pared down version will be give to Plus members for free, while a full retail release will also take place.

darren_poolies3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

It's not F2P it is going to be a full retail game sold for £40. A free version will be offered to PS+ members i.e. it will be missing some features and you will have the option to upgrade to the full game as a discounted price. How are people not getting this? It is very easy to understand.

FamilyGuy3930d ago

This is ridiculous.

DriveClub will NOT be releasing in Beta form

DriveClub is NOT a "Free to Play" game: It's a full retail release game which will have a version with less cars and tracks up for free download to PS+ members.

The DriveClub demo was made at the 35% mark, development is farther along than that now an a new demo is being shown at GDC to reflect a newer build.

DriveClub is "targeting" 60 frames per second but if it causes too much of a sacrifice in the visuals the devs will release it at 30 frames per second instead.

DriveClub has dynamic weather effects and lighting as well as form altering car damage (scratches and dents but no crushing vehicles). Forza has none of that and only has scratch/surface damage.

DriveClub assets will be left "open" so that the devs can continue to upgrade and alter the game over time. This is a positive note, they are not saying that they're "releasing an incomplete game" but rather that they will improve on the game based on user feedback and desire. If a new idea pops up they'll be able to add it in.

DriveClub is a social driving crew sim rather than a racing sim. It can have a first person view at any time and you build clubs like being in a clan. The racing aspect and car handling is not simulation based, it's made to be more fun like an arcade title.

Donnieboi3931d ago

Here's hoping that's the case. I'm especially excited about how they said there's an option to use the PS4's enhanced 1:1 sixaxis tech (way better than on PS3) to steer the vehicles 100% smoothly in first person view!

Although I hope the make a cheap, affordable plastic wheel with some weight, and resistance springs so that I can put the Dual Shock 4 into it and steer it with the same resistance we get from a real wheel. Holding it up in the air provides no resistance and looks a little silly tilting it.

C-Thunder3930d ago

Even better if my Logitech wheel worked, fingers crossed.

yewles13930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

I knew there would be such problems back when I read this:

http://www.pushsquare.com/n...

Also, to people saying it's F2P, STOP THAT CRAP NOW!!! PS2 and DCUO are TRUE F2P, and DriveClub marks the first time in PS+ history that you get content stripped from it compared to its retail version.

Nazara3930d ago

Isn't it also the first ps plus offering of a title at said titles launch window? Yeah I got sf4 and infamous 2 via ps plus, but how long after release? To me this seems like testing the waters, much like project spark is. Not sure why people are getting so touchy over it?

GribbleGrunger3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

It's not 'testing the waters'. For goodness sake, it's so easy to understand why Sony are having to go this route early on that it beggars believe people come up with alternative reasons. Sony won't be able to offer a robust line up for PS+ on PS4 because *drum roll* it's a brand new console and there is no library of older games.

brave27heart3930d ago

@Gribble

Hush mate. Talk too much common sense on here and they'll take you away!

FamilyGuy3930d ago

This isn't the first time actually.
Uncharted 3 released on PS+ with only its single player mode so it was stripped of its multiplayer.

There's a free-2-play version of its multiplayer on the PS Store but it is not like the retail release so even combining the two still doesn't get you the full retail version.

So again, this isn't the first time a stripped down version of a game has hit PS+
I just wish more people would understand that this isn't a F2P game. The article title alone made me not want to click the link because the author is already proving incompetence.

M-M3930d ago

I'm so tired of people complaining that it's not 60FPS(yet, who knows?). I will probably see myself saying this over and over, but if there was hypothetically a console with more power than a $2,000 gaming PC and they made the graphics look AMAZING and it was at 60FPS, developers would still probably sacrifice the half the frame rate for even more stunning graphics. I'm sorry, but I haven't heard a single person say at a store when buying a game say "Wow man! Do you see that smooth 60FPS gameplay? I'm getting this!". People usually say, "Wow these graphics are insane? I'm getting this".

bjmartynhak3930d ago

Actually I can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps. Unless it is in slow-mo.

KrisButtar3930d ago (Edited 3930d ago )

Me either, I actually didn't know there were different frame rate speeds. After I joined this site is when I found out some games run at different FPS and I've been gaming since Atari/NES. I also recently talked all my gamer friends about the different speeds. None of them knew anything and none can notice a difference either.

Edit: I found out about different FPS less than 242 days ago, been gaming a long time. Don't think the difference between 30fps and 60fps is important, if so few people notice

torchic3930d ago

the difference between locked-30fps and locked-60fps is difficult to notice, but still noticable

the difference between a "dynamic" 30fps (a-la Crysis 2 & Battlefield 3 on PS3) and a locked-60fps (CoD) is night and day.

that's my opinion on the issue. the KZSF reveal gameplay runs at 30fps and you could confuse it with 60fps

NeoTribe3930d ago

Nobody can tell the difference. Its xbots graspin at straws trying to downplay anything sony.

GameCents3930d ago

You are kidding right? 60fps is one of the many things gamers, including ps3 owners, complained about DmC not having earlier this year. Heck before next gen consoles were announced, 1080p and 60fps were all everybody could talk about. Then february came around and everybody realised that not all games from their favourite console maker would be 1080p and 60fps and suddenly it wasn't as important anymore.

mursumaki3930d ago

I agree that 60FPS isn't really important, but I really like to have 60FPS in racing games. I sure Drive club will be a great game, no matter if it is 30FPS or 60FPS :)

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

darthv72101d ago

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85101d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972101d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.

purple1011202d ago

i went to the article and theres only a couple racing games, cant find the button to move page on through all the adverts.

ah its changed to a video now, strange, but il take it

Dfooster1201d ago

Dirt rally doesn't even make the list? Errm OK then.

Driveclub is over rated as well, with middle of the road handling and the 30fps killed it upon arrival for me.
