9 Alternative Gaming Consoles | Looking beyond Xbox, PlayStation and Wii

Year 2013 really is and will continue to be a turning point in the history of home consoles. For all video game lovers, Xbox and PlayStation are two very big and popular products in history of gaming. Both these consoles are getting an upgrade this year. Microsoft announced Xbox One, followed by Sony with the announcement of the new PS4. However, apart from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, what choices do we have exactly?

Until last year, a gaming device, either a console, or a handheld, meant choosing from Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation, or Nintendo Wii and DS. But starting this year, thanks to crowdfunding, we are seeing various alternative gaming consoles, with promising features at a cheaper price. (Casual games, Dev, GameStick, Ouya, Tech)

Didn't OnLive die?

Some look cool (Razer Edge + Sheild) but the problem is they are either just obscenely expensive or utterly pointless. There is no serious step by any of them. I can see the ones like OUYA trying to develop their own market space but to do so you need to do more than just release a box. OUYA isn't good. It almost becomes an advocate not to move away from the traditional consoles which is sad because I would have really liked things like this to work.

OnLive never died. They've been up 24/7 since launch. They're supposed to launch something that will supposedly shake up the industy this fall but I'll believe it when I see it.

Good article. These alternatives won't sell as much as the PS4 or X1. They will stop the PS4 and X1 from selling as much as the PS3 and 360 tho. These alternative choices didn't really exist when the PS3 and 360 first launched. And don't forget that Google is releasing a home console too. I've even heard rumors of Apple releasing a console one day and they have the most money to threaten any console. It's hard to confirm that since Apple is so secretive. Mobile gaming is a growing industry. The Japanese now prefer mobile gaming over game consoles and that trend is growing everywhere. EA claimed that the next tablets will have PS3 graphics. Once controllers are readily available for tablets and mobile devices they'll put a dent in the sales of the next gen consoles.
