Top 5 Survival Horror Games

"Survival horror is one of gaming’s most exciting genres. Combat is part of the gameplay but the players are often made to feel less powerful than their enemies, invoking fear and excitement. Gamers are usually limited in ammunition and health to further add to the difficulty and tension. Join BootHammer as we take a look at our Top 5 Survival Horror Games." (Dead Space, Dino Crisis, PC, PS2, PS3, Resident Evil, Silent Hill 2, Wii U, Xbox, Xbox 360)

Wow, I can't believe I was afraid of a dinosaur game. But then again.. it was kinda scary lol they popped out of nowhere and you were always low on ammo.

Amazing game to be honest. Wish they did one as good as the old ones.

On topic: My favorite survival horror is Dead Space 2. Silent Hill 3 was amazing too.

It's hard for me to call Dead Space 2 a survival horror game... horror? yes. But I don't get too much of a survival feel from it. THe first one was closer to survival horror though.

Imagine a next gen remake..
BadCircuit  +   498d ago
It looks good for survival horror games as more seem to be on the way!
BootHammer  +   498d ago
It sure does...one of my favorite genres. Can't wait to see what the devs bring to the table with the new hardware later this year.

Zombi U ?
BootHammer  +   498d ago
I personally really enjoyed it and the additional features found on the GamePad were a nice touch. It was a really creepy and challenging game.
Zack_Fair  +   498d ago
No Fatal Frame? :(
TXIDarkAvenger  +   498d ago
Exactly what I was thinking. 5 is too little, should be more like Top 10. Games like Fatal Frame and Siren should be well up in the top 10.
Number-Nine  +   498d ago
dead space 2 was better than 1.
Jagsrock  +   498d ago
condemned criminal origins is still one of my favorites. Can't wait for Evil within and Outlast.
TalesofDalton  +   498d ago
Nice List, and I definitely agree with most of it. If you were to swap Zombie U for Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Silent Hill 2 for Alan Wake, then we would be on exactly the same page.
BootHammer  +   498d ago
I almost had Alan Wake up there! ;) Great game...
Ben_Rage_3  +   498d ago
I just recieved my new gaming rig yesterday, and I just bought Alan Wake on Steam for three bucks. I have heard nothing but great things about Alan Wake and I cannot wait to start playing it.
nosferatuzodd  +   497d ago
Alan Wake is not bad but i don't see that game in the top 5

Nice list. I would put REmake above the original Resident Evil though. REmake did what few other remakes acheive, it's better than the original in every conceivable way. Easily one of the greatest survival horror games of all time if you ask me.
BootHammer  +   498d ago
Great point, it was truly a near perfect remake.

Nice to see Zombi U be on the list. That game did things I had never seen before in a game. Thanks to the gamepad. Too many people who have never played it dismiss it.
Ac7iVe  +   498d ago
Zombiu will have you jumping and screaming "oh shit" constantly, great game everyone needs to experience it, clunky controls justs add to the tension which made that game very fun.
yeahokchief  +   498d ago
The Evil Within will shortly be replacing ZombiU in this list come next year! Made by the creator of the genre Shinji Mikami.
TechnicianTed  +   498d ago
He's not the creator of the genre, Alone in the Dark came out before Resident Evil and that was a survival horror game.
yeahokchief  +   498d ago
Go onto wikipedia and read. First game where the term survival horror was coined and popularized was resident evil.

If you want to apply it retroactively, you could apply it to Haunted House on the atari from 1982. Alone in the Dark didnt come out for another 10 years in 1992.

I don't really care if the term 'survival horror' was coined with Resident Evil, the fact is there were games before it in the same genre that came before Resident Evil. So obviously he wasn't the creator of the genre was he?

And if YOU look on Wiki you can see this -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Notice where it says 'Alone in the Dark is a critically acclaimed 1992 survival horror action-adventure' and also -

'and is considered the first 3D survival horror game.'

Thanks for pointing to Wiki to cement the point I was making.

both enjoy survival horror games. its time for a burrito.
Squall5005  +   498d ago
The Last of Us should be in that list.
nosferatuzodd  +   497d ago
too early dude i love lost of us too but its like a new artist just came on the seen and claiming he is the king of music when you have people like Micheal Jackson and lots of other great artist out there
Squall5005  +   497d ago
This is a top 5 list of 'Survival Horror games'.

Not a top 5 list of 'Survival Horror games that are older so they deserve more respect'

ZombiU is in his list and that game is barely 7 months old.

It doesn't matter how new The Last of Us is. It's proper survival horror and has excellent narrative and characterisation. Ammo is limited, combat is brutal and it has some of the most tense atmosphere I've seen in a videogame. If we are just talking about how 'scary' a game is and excluding every other aspect, TLOU would be number one in my list, easily.
JW1080  +   498d ago
I haven't played too many survival horror games but if I had to pick just one it would be the original Dead Space. It was completely new and fresh and you didn't know what to expect. The atmosphere was really creepy and so were all the sounds in the game. A shame how Dead Space 3 turned out. It seems like survival horror games are poised to make a big comeback and regain some of that popularity they once had.
Kyosuke_Sanada  +   498d ago
Biohazard II should have been in the top 2. I do love the first mind you but the sheer amount of content offered in the game still haven't been rivaled from any other survival horror for consoles (Biohazard 4 came close I think).

I like ZombiU, but Eternal Darkness was a much better Survival Horror game IMO.
