Does Anybody Care About Second-Screen Experiences?

According to 30,000 IGN readers who responded to a survey, the most valuable and interesting second-screen gaming experience is looking at inventory and maps.
In the survey, IGN asked which features -- asynchronous multiplayer, maps, inventory, asymmetrical multiplayer, controller functionality -- users were interested in. Users could express interest in features and disinterest in the concept for various platforms they owned. (Culture, Industry)

I do its an awesome addition to gaming.

I'll use remote-play between PS4 and VITA, that sounds like a good feature to have.

As for app companion stuff; I'm not sure.

Thats not really second screen though. Your EITHER playing a PS4 game on the PS4 or a PS4 game via remote play, hence choosing between one screen or another.

We haven't seen how the Vita can enhance a PS4 title on the big screen.

That isn't SS experience...

LittleBigPlanet 2 uses the Vita as a second screen.
badz149  +   814d ago
Sly 4 uses the Vita as 2nd screen too. but that's just to help you find treasures and fully optional.

basically, I don't really care about 2nd screen though as if I did, I would have bought myself a DS or 3DS by now but I just don't get the appeal...and granted that I am not the biggest fan of Nintendo games.

the thing work great on DS/3ds because the screens arevery close and you can look the other screen in a split of second, you almost don't loose sign of the first screen some times... same thing can't be said of WIIU, the thing is a bit slow and you lose the focus in the first screem when you look at the screen in your hands in most of time.

I like second-screen stuff on an integrated system like the DS or 3DS. I also like having the entire game streamed to a handheld screen (Wii-U, Vita).

However, taking stuff off the main TV and putting it on a smaller screen? Reeks of gimmick, IMO, and not that interesting.

If only one could take the gamepad anywhere it would've made it all that awesome. Nintendo really let that one go. ;)

IGN are on a roll with flamebait articles. What happened to this website? =/
lashes2ashes  +   814d ago
How is this a flamebait article. It's a interesting question, with all three systems doing second screen experiences do the gamers really even care. For me its hard to say, right now I'm not impressed with it but I see if done right it could be amazing.

Integration between Window$ 8 tablets /Wp8 phones and XB1.

The second screen could be use to look at your inventory and map in a RPG or Statistics/formations in a sport game and so on
Number-Nine  +   814d ago
I was going to say no but then i thought about how easy the water temple in ocarina of time was with the 2nd screen.

Second and third screens on a PC are killer. A second screen done right on consoles would be a very cool thing. The biggest problem I see is how to access it. Nintendo did a real nice job integrating the screen into the controller. It's very natural feeling, but stll has it's limitations. The key to the second screen is to increase immersion. If this can't be done it shouldn't be used.
MysticStrummer  +   814d ago
Just like any other aspect of gaming it will depend on how it's done. Back when the PSP originally launched I envisioned playing Metal Gear and getting codec calls, or playing an Aliens game and getting the motion sensor readout on my PSP. Most of what I hear about second screen isn't something I care about, but it does have potential.
xJumpManx  +   814d ago
Its fine as long as they do not ever go the route of the DS with those god awful stylus like controlled games. Only Nintendo would ruin Zelda with those horrible ds zelda games.
turgore  +   814d ago
DId you see Watch Dogs ? A second player can be on the tablet and wreak havoc in the world. It seems so chaotic and fun.
kwyjibo  +   814d ago
No, I don't care.

It might be a nice to have feature, but don't make it mandatory.
Cmk0121  +   814d ago
It is never to be mandatory only additional. IE dead rising has additional missions that can only be accessed via smartglass a free app for Xbox. You can't get the missions without but they don't affect the primary story. People
Will bitch but it allows another person to join and it's free additional content we all can choose if you have tablet or smartphone . I don't want too much focus because it just leads me to believe paid apps and Ish wil come as they try to merge mobile gaming and consoles. Mobile gaming is easy to make money on

It's no game changer to me, but it could be used in some pretty cool ways like Ubisoft demoed. or like it's used in Sony's Playroom. but overall i just want to enjoy my game, i don't want to be bothered too much by some other screen. It's like these second screen things with movies now, i just want to sit and enjoy the damn film, not have a bunch of info thrown at me disconnecting me from the experience.
NavydAd  +   814d ago
I liked what they are doing with The Division and being able to use my Tablet to help my friends when I'm not at home.
Firan  +   814d ago
I certainly do even if the second screen is mostly used for maps and other UI stuff. It's pretty convenient.
Faztkiller  +   814d ago
Stuff like remote play is cool but stuff like having a map or stuff on your phone doesn't interest me one bit
mydyingparadiselost  +   814d ago
I'd say this poll pretty accurately describes my interest, I have a WiiU and getting the menu, inventory and map off the TV and on the pad is awesome. I'm really interested in the screen for actual game control too but outside of The Wonderfull 101 not much is really looking to use it as a meaningful input method, I hope that changes for some games but definately not most.
Outside of WiiU I don't really care about second screen, not having it as the controller makes the screen awkward and doesn't seem to offer as much, though something with the Vita and PS 3-4 could change my mind if done right.

At best its a convenience. But to create a whole console based on a convenience is silly. A convenience, mind you, that not many people care about.
Allsystemgamer  +   814d ago
Next up 3 screen experiences!!!
TheUndertaker85  +   814d ago
Gran Turismo 5 offers support for three screens at once. It also does five.

Three Screen

Five Screen
Allsystemgamer  +   814d ago
Yea I know. Most PC games do as well and I have 3 monitors, mainly for video editing but I game on them too. But we're not talking about pc so ill leave that out :p
Dlacy13g  +   814d ago
For me... I haven't really cared about 2nd screen because there really hasn't been a great case for it yet. That can easily change but as of now... not really a thing I care about.
Bhuahahaha  +   814d ago
for me its only good with a handheld.
