Breaking Out of the Zelda Formula: Your Own Personal Link

GenGAME writes: "Since The Legend of Zelda once made the bold proposition that players should be able to name their heroes, is it really so necessary for Link to retain his traditional usually-blond-but-sometimes-br own-haired young man appearance? After all, today it’s easier than ever for players to insert their own designs and adapt their characters to the image they prefer." (3DS, The Legend of Zelda, Wii U)

I'm not sure how that would turn out. The story would have to be crafted in a very clever manner for that to work. What if you have a Link who's a brawny, strong, jock-type in one person's game and a slender, smaller, more underdog-esque type of Link in another? How would the story accommodate both of these Links in the same game unless it adjusts based on how the customizations have been fitted?

It's not like Skyrim where your character is essentially nameless and then you make a name for yourself, Link is a fairly established character with his own personality traits (see his expressions in Wind Waker and it will be easier to understand this point). In Skyward Sword, he was a boy whom no one (except for a very awesome rendition of Zelda) believe in, whereas in Ocarina of Time, he was someone born with an incredible destiny and so on and so forth.

Don't get me wrong, I'll bet you there's a way to make it work very well, but I do have my doubts about the concept when considering the formula in its current state. Anyway, those are just my thoughts.

The only thing I can find acceptable is having Link be able to wear different types of armor/clothing. Like these black gaunlets will give Link 2+ to Attack but these bandaged type gloves will give Link an extra heart. You know what I mean? Changing Link's appearance like height or nose type is unnecessary for a character that has been known for over 25 years. Gamers are already used to that, but what has almost always changed was his clothing, shield, and sword. Seeing Link have the ability to wear 100 kinds of armor in one game would be cool. It might not change who he is but his outer appearance will be unique to everyone. Having enchanting, even more different swords and shields would also be cool. Damn, add the ability to customize the art on your shield, too.

I dont think the game needs to cater the story to you're body type, actually i dont think any Zelda game describes any features of link. They decribe his attitude and courage though. And Nintendo themselves said that link is you the name link is just a place holder for you're name or my name imo.
