96,97,98 were great years for 3d platformers, racers, fPS games, RPGS, action adventures games, horror games, everything.

Those 3 years have us so many different types of games.

It wasn't just all FPS.

2007 is one I really, really loved. Getting Bioshock and Mass Effect (which was oddly absent from the write-up) in the same year was fantastic. I didn't play the first Witcher until a couple years later, but that was amazing as well. Plus, the Orange Box releasing with Portal included...

What a great year. I hope to experience another one of those soon.

Yeah, 1998 is in my opinion the best year in gaming history. In fact, I don't think it can even be argued against from an objective standpoint.

2013 is looking really good. We have two games (Bioshock: Infinite and The Last of Us) that I feel are all-timers, and at least one more (GTAV) that has potential to join them. In the end, I don't know if there will be enough all time great games this year to compare to the best couple years, but it certainly feels like a year people will remember and talk about a decade from now.

I agree that this has been a spectacular year so far. The Last Of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Metro: Last Light, the remade Tomb Raider, Injustice, Shin Megami Tensei 4, Animal Crossing, Civ 5: Brave New World... and what's yet to come! Dragon's Crown, Saints Row 4, Killzone Mercenary, GTA5, Beyong: Two Souls, Arkham Origins, Tearaway, Watch Dogs, Wasteland 2...

We should count our blessings, my friends.

1998. Half Life, Starcraft. Thats the best year.

1998 completely annihilates the other years.

It's not even close and the best thing about the games of 1998 is that most of them were original recipe, not sequels. It was that year in particular that caused the fall of the arcade scene. How could arcades compare to the epic win that was releasing on home consoles?

Gaming was changed forever that year and we are still feeling the effects of it. Of course, I loved the entire decade of the 90s but '98 stands tall as the shining pinnacle of gaming history. May we all see another year like that again soon!

I think that with games such as The Last of Us, Metro: Last Light, Bioshock Infinity, Tomb Raider, Ni No Kuni, plus more yet to come (Watch Dogs, GTAV, Xilia, Blacklist, Beyond, Arkham Origins, The Bureau, FFXIV, Diablo3...), 2013 is a must on this list. Such a great year to be a gamer!

Just to toss this in for any sports fans on here. 1998 was also the year the Hot Shots Golf series got its start. There is no series of games that I have logged more hours playing than Hot Shots. Still the greatest pick up and play golf game for the masses.

You got it there. We used to play with 4 people at $5 a head, winner takes the money. Did this for years and everyone wanted in on it. Too much fun.

'98 ftw. Where is 2008, though?
Alone the release of MGS4 makes the year my number 1. Also GTA IV and RE5 ( I know, not a true RE but it was fun as HELL back in the days).
BosSSyndrome  +   463d ago
I kinda wanted 2010 here but it's a great list. 98 ftw OoT and Sonic Adventure.
Z3R0Coo1  +   463d ago
Number 1, love ya, but No. 4 Shud be Number 2.

2004 was the year of the sequel - you could barely buy anything except a sequel that year. Some were great (Half Life 2 / San Andreas) but
2003 was fine too:

1080 Avalanche
Beyond Good and Evil
Billy Hatcher
F Zero GX
Grabbed by the ghoulies
Gregory Horror Show
James Bond 007: Everything or nothing
Max Payne 2
Outrun 2
Silent Hill 3
SSX3

1998 is definetly the best year of gaming, at least for me. I remember me and my brother saving all our money for the holdiay season that year.
We split the purchases... he picked up the PS1 and memory card and I picked up a dual shock, MGS1 and TEKKEN 3.

One of the best times of my life.

PS: I am greatly surpised that TEKKEN 3 was not on that list for 1998 games (though the Arcade ver. released in 1997, the ps1 ver. came out 1998). It was one of THE top games that got ppl to buy a ps1.
StrawHatPatriot  +   462d ago
was Sonic Adventure mentioned too? Cause that came out for the Dreamcast.

also crash bandicoot 3
arsg  +   462d ago
2001 should at least be top 5.

GTA3
Silent Hill 2
Halo
FFX
SSB Melee
MGS2
DMC
Advance Wars
Ico
Black & White
Jak & Daxter
Conker
