American McGee stretches on Kickstarter to bring back another kind of Oz (interview)

American McGee has dreamed about making a game based on a reinterpretation of the Wizard of Oz for a long time. At Spicy Horse Games in Shanghai, he is hoping to get that chance. (American McGee, PC)

Oh no..

A new age take on Oz will no doubt give us an "empowered" and "liberated" Dorothy who is unrealistically able to best men in combat, and acts like a disgusting little whore.

This will be one of the larger bags of turd produced in the next few years.

Sadly, I won't back him. The sequel to Alice was one of the ugliest, most uninspired treks through a video game I've ever endured.

You made the original Alice, kudos. Everything since has been terrible.

Whoa. Are you serious?
How was the sequel uninspired in the least?

Combat was terrible.
Camera was terrible.
Graphics were terrible.
Levels dragged on and on and on and on and ... and on.
Platforming was dull and over abused.

The undersea level was the only good one imo.

I really enjoyed Alice Returns. That said I do not feel McGee has the right touch to preserve The Wizard of Oz and its particular magic.

It's rather similar to the fact that there is a great deal in the literary and cinema world that Tim Burton should leave the hell alone. He is remarkable in a few things but with most an utter disaster. It's either feast or famine.

American McGee is a similar creator and Oz is a property that just isnt for him.

Alice madness returns was a very good game, not perfect, but definitely not mediocre
SlapHappyJesus  +   566d ago
Honestly, I would have to disagree.
While the game is not perfect, everything about the game holds up pretty well.
The combat is serviceable and, in my opinion, plays second to the world and story itself.
That's exactly what I took the game for - an atmosphere piece.
I really liked the game.

American McGee is quite literally the Tim Burton of video games.

Agreed if by that we mean, 'Guy who takes other people's stories and makes them look like they were designed by Edward Gorey, which worked for a while back in the day but now just depresses you with it's laziness and familiarity'.

that's exactly right.
