Where do console names come from

Jonathan Bester from ITF Gaming writes: Recently Microsoft announced their much-anticipated next-gen console – Xbox One. It was a strange choice for the name of the console, but the idea obviously came from Microsoft’s intention to make it an all in one solution for all things entertainment, so it does make sense in a way, but there are plenty of consoles out in the market today whose names do not make sense. In this article I will take a look at some of these peculiar names and see how they came to be. (3DS, Culture, PS3, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360)

Can't believe that companies spend millions upon millions of dollars on stats and trends for a name alone. I wish I would have gone into marketing now!!! lol

I still think that "Xbox One" is a bad name. It should have been called "Xbox Infinity" or "Xbox Infinite" since Microsoft wants the console to have infinite possibilities. That would be better than "One", it gives a much more broader meaning of the center of the living room.

I agree. Also because the name is just clumsy as F. I mean you always have to specify that you're talking about the Xbone rather than the OG 1st gen Xbox. Pretty boneheaded move on Xbox's part (pun intended)

Microsoft's names come from Sony.

They called the 360 the 360 because they didn't want to have an "Xbox 2" competing with a "Playstation 3," likewise the Xbox One is the Xbox One because they didn't want to put an "Xbox 3" against "Playstation 4."

The Playstation name is pretty self-explanatory.

Nintendo names are even more obvious/appropriate/self-expla natory.

Famicom = family computer
Super Famicom = better family computer
Nintendo 64 = 64-bit system
Gamecube = it's a cube that plays game (same stupid logic as Xbox name)
Wii = "We," built around cooperative play.
Wii U = "We, you" built around asymmetric cooperative play.

Names of all the XBox consoles probably came from a combination of the trendies, the lab coats and the CEO's at Microsoft.

With the CEO's having the final say.

Short name for XBOX ONE = XBONE lol.

But on Sony's new system it's called Playstation 4, in short PS4.. Good enough
