Wii U Still Has an Edge This Generation

GenGAME writes: "If Nintendo continues to pursue its strengths – that is, if they make sure the gamers they’ve pleased in generations past aren’t neglected, all the while seeking out new players by introducing new “Nintendo”-like IP – Wii U will be just fine. And that’s how it should be. No one else in the industry has made as strong an effort to give those gamers – in particular, gamers who are more interested in just having fun than in graphics, generations, or gamerscores – the first-class attention they deserve." (Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Galaxy, Wii U)

A caveat to this article: Wii U has an edge... Nintendo just needs to actually follow through with the "let's capture classic gaming fans and use motion controls/GamePad in a meaningful way" ideal going forward.

That, of course, is no guarantee.

It would be pretty jarring if Nintendo made such a huge turn-around that Wii U did better than PS4/Xbox One. But at this stage it's pretty unlikely.

I think they should just aim for whatever success they can achieve and get some games that will attract audiences. Pull a 3DS and get people to want this thing. Having an exclusive Atlus game (Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem) may help, as will the exclusive Sonic coming this year. Games, games, games. And marketing. And obviously a price cut somewhere down the line.

They need a price cut

That depends. Nintendo may not be seeing much customer loyalty at this phase, but what makes you think Xbox/PlayStation will?

@legendoflex

Just the general vibe. I don't know anyone who isn't buying one of the two but more than enough people who are either on the fence on Wii U or are not interested altogether.

PS4 seems to have the greatest chance of success and Xbox One still has a shot to beat its current reputation. It ain't over until these consoles are on the market for at least a few years. I'll be very surprised if they, especially the PS4, don't sell at least at what is expected.

PopRocks359, man you rock.
You almost always share my sentiment.
As a WiiU owner I really want the system to succeed.
I just hope they can get their s**t together and give me some quality games sooner than later!

Nintendo needs a lot of catching up to do, the WiiU is almost a year and they have done absolutely nothing to use that time to their advantage. ;)

Well it's edge is the best exclusives in the industry Zelda,Metroid,Mariokart,Smash,
ect,and the gamepad features are easy to market ie Splinter cell Blacklist's GAMEPAD features, compared to ps4's or xbox ones, even Ubisoft said it's hard to market ps4/xbox1's advantages over ps3 and 360 ???

Then you have that big ? mark is it worth owning a ps4 or xbox1 just for the odd graphical/AI advantage over ps3 ect ?? when you can get a graphical/AI advantage on wiiu but with added cool interaction's ??

They still have yet to release 4 games that will sell 5+ million copies and 1-2 million Wii U's.

They need games. End of story.
LOGICWINS  +   435d ago
Not just games. New IPs that get people excited!

A sharp edge that it can put it's throat on and decapitate itself.
nzbleach  +   435d ago
Nintendo didn't market it very well but it's got a shot at success this holidays

I'm just wondering why SE didn't port FFXIV online on Wii U?.
Shadowsteal  +   435d ago
Why would they do that? Wii U gamers are desperate for games at this point. 3rd party devs don't want to develop on the Wii U so leave them alone or ask Nintendo to pay them.

Customer loyalty?

The reason the Wii did so well was because of the casual mum/dad/gran parents, same as the 2ds/3ds. All generations.

But with the Wii u, it's graphics are like PS3/360, alot of people do not like the tablet.

As for PS4/ONE. They have a bigger hardcore following, and if they have games for casuals they will get some sales that way.

Were i Ninty, i'd drop the price.

But i still think they will still do ok xmas time.

WiiU graphics are generations and generations ahead just like ps4,if anything wiiu has proven it more so with more 1080p/60fps games actually running on the devkits, many devs that have actually developed on wiiu ie,Shinen,Criterion,Gearbox,Tr ine2DC dev,say its a very very powerful console and defo nextgen, even NFS on wiiu looks outstanding i'd say better than GT6.....

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Here's a comparison of GT6 and Project CARS,i think NFS on wiiu has alot of the textures that PCARS has and defo has the sun glare ect,GT6 looks bland....

WiiU i'm looking foward too,Smash bros,Zelda,Pikimin,Mariokart,B ayonetta2,X,Project CARS,Splintercell,Windwaker,Wo nderful 101,COD GHOSTS ?,and lots of eshop games, this is without knowing them other 3rd party games that Iwata mentioned....

Here's an idea Nintendo it called marketing.
1: several people asked me why they would pay 350$ for a tablet controller for the Wii they paid 150$ for. (They ask me because at my work every one knows I am the geek, games, comics books, walking dead, movies. You get the idea)
2: ask if Nintendo is releasing a new system like Xbox and ps.
3: hardly anybody knows what wiiu can do, but every one knows it's perceived short comings. 2 GB of ram, 32 gb HD, with I think 25 gb available for use.
So they better start advertising the he'll out of this thing or risk being left in the dust by what I am sure will be a tidal wave of ms an sony ads
