VGU Reader Discussion: How Do You Feel About Smartphone Companion Apps?

Are smartphone companion apps quickly becoming an essential part of the core gaming experience? Or are they just another gimmicky fad that will fade away with time? (Android, Battlefield 3, EA, Hitman: Absolution, iPad, iPhone, Mass Effect 3, Mobile, Watch Dogs)

It can be cool but not for stuff that's for while your playing i.e. air srikes in DR3. If you have to drop the controller or prop your phone/tablet up in front of you while your playing it's dumb, but offering customization options or something of that nature that can be done in the game itself but takes away from actual play time is awesome.
