Massive’s David Polfeldt on Removing the “2D Space” from The Division to Make it Truly Next Gen

om Clancy’s The Division is one of the most anticipated next generation games, but what makes it truly “Next Gen?” According to Massive Entertainments Managing Director David Polfeldt one of the elements contributing to the generational leap is the removal of the two-dimensional UI between the player and the game. (PS4, Tom Clancy’s The Division, Xbox One)

The ultimate problem in every gam is making a HUD/UI that is truly diegtic to the game itself, one of the best examples of this would be the Halo and Crysis series of video games, the HUD is actually apart of the lore and applies a more immerse experience as the HUD is actually apart of the players "Visor". Another example of a good diegetic placement in a FPS would be in quite a few Sci-fi games, e.g. the bullet count on the assault rifle in Halo actually is shown on the weapon.
What developers should be working on is ways to move the player forward in a games without cluttering the screen and having to use objective markers and basic instructions; which can make the game look shoddy and linear.

Yep, I agree, they do seem to be doing a good job with that in the division mind you.

I totally agree.

However.

It will be pretty cool to see even next gen HUDs. They have so many more resources to spare that HUDs will get just as much as an upgrade as other aspects too.

While I applaud them for their creativity in making the 3d UI, I don't consider that next gen. I just consider it taking the time to make it more natural. To me the biggest parts of the game that make it next gen (for consoles)are the improved graphics, scope/size of the game world and the seamless transitions between single player/co-op/pvp. Thats what I see as the main differentiators of next gen.

personaly i like what they did with dead space 3 were the hud was actually part of the character so it appears to have none.

and to me what makes a next gen game isnt just the graphics but the game its self having really good ais bigger worlds that you can get involved in.
