‘The Last of Us’ Gives Zombies New Life : Wall Street Journal

Since it was first released to PlayStation 3 owners last month, The Last of Us has been hailed as an artistic masterpiece of a kind rarely seen before in the history of video games. But for all the pomp and circumstance, it’s not like a game like this hasn’t been a long time in the making. (Bruce Straley, Neil Druckman, PS3, The Last Of Us)

... except it's not a zombie game...

I think he/she means the concept of zombies, the idea of the whole thing, and I agree it was a very refreshing theme. Even though the infected were not the center of the game, it was rather disturbing to know these people were still alive ect..

Kind of like if you were to linger around a runner for a moment or two, you can actually hear them crying or trying to cry. Scary stuff!

I think Zombie has become something of a generic term. Under these new rules a vampire is now a zombie because they infect other people with their vampirism and they are dead but living. Frankenstein is also now a zombie because he was once dead and now he's alive (a walking dead). Perhaps we should extend this to people with skin problems that make them look like zombies ... or even pasty faced people with little energy who amble about their homes! There are stories that zombies walked the streets of London in the time of the plague, but that's only a rumour. There is also speculation that an Egyptian mummy is really just a badly injured zombie.

I'm pretty sure they meet the definition of Zombie. They were human, then got infected (mostly through bites at first), they go through different stages of degeneration, and they attack those who are not zombies instinctively on site.

no, they're still technically alive, as someone above pointed out.

and it's different stages of a fungal infection, not degeneration.

not zombie.

28 days later the Zombies were alive but died of starvation after a month. Does that make them not zombies?

They are mindless killing machines that were once normal humans taken over by a virus (whether viral or bacterial) and slowly deteriorate over time. The means of which they became mindless killing machines is moot. Walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, tastes like a duck- it is a duck.

Your arguement is like saying that an Upir is not a vampire because they can walk in daylight. They are still in fact Vampires. They just are different from Bram Stokers sort of Vampire.

28 days later zombies were only killed via a blow to the head as well. you can shoot any of the infected in this game anywhere, and they'll die.

turning requires death to occur, which is not the case in this game.

in some instances, you hear them weeping, so they're not completely mindless.

and the devs have said themselves that they're not zombies...

so... not zombie.

Yes, overall they are zombies. Just a super fresh new take on them. No need to bust out the pitchforks people.
