Could Naughty Dog be planning a Co-op element to The Last of Us?

There is currently a position available for a Game Designer (co-op) on Naughty Dog's career website. The company ask for a variety of skills and requirements but what we are really interested in is what title this person will be working on?

*** I think the one thing The Last of Us was missing was a co-op mode. The game made you grow bonds with Joel and Ellie, so what better way is there to increase this immersion. To put 2 best friends playing side by side or online acting as each others backup, much like in the main story but with the added feature that you are enjoying the story with another person at the same time. ***

That just wouldn't work. It would spoil the game, the NPC's have roles and people being able to control them would let them to do their roles.

It wouldn't work in single player. Ellie being an NPC is better because it allowed you to get to know her when she had her moments where you could talk to her.

A coop horde mode where a team has to survive infinite waves of infected/survivors would be perfect.

They could use all the existing multiplayer maps in the game, and teams would have to move around the maps to scavenge supplies (like in competitive multiplayer) and set traps etc.

See how many waves of AI enemies a team of four people could survive before everybody dies.

Would work perfectly, be easy to implement, keep to the themes of the game AND be incredibly fun.

There isnt enough variety in enemy types to implement a horse mode though. 3 infected variations and the hunters. It would get dull very quickly in an infinite horde mode

I see what you're getting at for sure, but at the same time I don't think a lack of enemy types hurt the Uncharted 3 survival mode, did it? They really only had normal enemies, armored enemies and then the gasmask chokers. They added variety though by giving them all different weapons, which again could work well in TLOU.

So for example you could have the various infected enemies yeah, but also hunters that all use different weapons and some might be heavily armored while others aren't etc. I think they could be pretty creative with what they've got.

A separate coop mode would be fine but that's it.

The last of us is really more so a personal thing so a non story coop is fine a main story coop wouldn't go so well

Personally I doubt it's for TLoU, although they've stated they want to support the game for a longtime, this seems like to much effort and to late in the day to invest in a released title. No matter how successful.

Hazard a guess it's for something else, something new.

This would interesting, maybe a separate story, like what they plan to do with Bioshock Infinite. But I want a solid story, thats key. The mechanics are solid.

A co-op mode akin to Uncharted's with a separate narrative would be neat, but I'm more inclined to think ND is prepping for a next-gen title - whether that's Uncharted 4 or a new IP altogether.

Side story co-op with Frank and Bill in his town is what I have been thinking could work well for a while now. I'd love it.
