PS4: Sony built "giant" controller to test accessibility in 'Knack'

Sony created a "giant" DualShock controller when designing PS4 game Knack.

The firm created a controller 50% larger than usual, so it could "directly experience" what it was like for a child to play a console game.

"Our quest to make the on ramp to the world of console games [for new players] has taken us to some rather interesting places," explained lead architect Mark Cerny at a Develop conference keynote attended by Digital Spy.

"The issue [with a controller] was not the complicity of the control scheme, but as much as the size of the controller versus the size of their hands.

"We immediately understood that the shoulder buttons are simply out of reach for the typical eight year old, but that all face buttons could be used quite readily."

Cerny underwent the process when creating PS4 launch title, which is designed to offer an old school challenge but also be approached as an ideal first console game. (Knack, PS4)

I really want to try it!

They should make the DS3 available to use on the PS4 like every other Playstation system allowed use of the previous systems controller. I'm still looking forward to the DS4 though.

Could you tell me where the PS1/2 controller port on the PS3 is? I can't seem to find it on my phat or slim XD

@Dark_Overlord: It's called the USB port and an adapter. There's many of me around.

@Undertaker

I have a similar one, if you read Mulekick's comment he stated the machine itself supported it WITHOUT 3rd party attachments :)

@Dark_Overlord
Did you read my comment? "available to use" and "allowed use".
Come on with the nit-pickin'
Semantics the best, semantics that!

now if only you could make it so the microphone is out of reach to those same 8 year olds :)

I still want the original ps3 controller.

How would you know this unless you have played a game with the Dual Shock 4?
nick309  +   570d ago
I did at e3, not that im saying that the dualshock 4 is bad, i want the ps3 original controller because the design still looks cool.

My little brother (3) is trying to get into gaming but some of the controls are just out of reach. I'm glad he is making knack's controls more kid orientated. I grew up in the late ps1 and ps2 days and I remember them fondly. I hope my bro can say the same for the ps3&ps4.

Really nice effort, the more I hear about this Mark Cerny, the more I like it.
