Sony created a "giant" DualShock controller when designing PS4 game Knack.
The firm created a controller 50% larger than usual, so it could "directly experience" what it was like for a child to play a console game.
"Our quest to make the on ramp to the world of console games [for new players] has taken us to some rather interesting places," explained lead architect Mark Cerny at a Develop conference keynote attended by Digital Spy.
"The issue [with a controller] was not the complicity of the control scheme, but as much as the size of the controller versus the size of their hands.
"We immediately understood that the shoulder buttons are simply out of reach for the typical eight year old, but that all face buttons could be used quite readily."
Cerny underwent the process when creating PS4 launch title, which is designed to offer an old school challenge but also be approached as an ideal first console game.
