After a bad start, here are some possibilities Microsoft could present to give the Xbox One an edge over the PS4 when they release later this year.
As much as I enjoy speculating about the gaming industry, reality dictates that we have to wait and see. We still have 2 major gaming shows left this year and tons of other factors to consider going into this next gamin cycle. I am a PS4 day one buyer, already having 2 pre-ordered, but I fully expect that the X1 will hang in there. That being said, I think that Sony definitely has the edge in product value, as well as public sentiment and barring some huge mistake, I don't see that changing. The only thing that is certain is that we have some interesting months ahead of us. Should be interesting to watch, no matter what you plan on purchasing at the end of the day.
Post reversal Microsoft is still in a great position to take NPD this holiday. But, they still have their work cut out for them even to say that. As for the UK and beyond, MS needs to treat the rest of the conferences like E3 and go all-out and they can end up being very competitive when it's all said and done. But even then it would be extremely hard to gain ground in a significant way until post launch in Europe. It's early though, the major marketing campaigns have not even begun Evil
One ads in theaters. The marketing has begun.
@Mysticstrummer - 1 ad isn't going to cut it. :D Seriously though, MS ads tend to be quite good, so will be interesting to see if ad money can bring them out of the hole they've dug for themselves.
Loving season 5, Also PS4 day 1, and for the xbone it just needs games to succeed, not apps. Kinect games won't do either, we need to be able to see The Last of Us caliber games on the horizon from M$'s 1st party.
Something that people are forgetting is that Xbox One is having (rumored) supply issues, so for the first 6 months both systems might be "sold out", but if Sony is manufacturing three times the number of consoles, guess which one is going to have higher sales numbers? That said, the Xbox One Day One edition still isn't sold out yet (despite the lower supply) yet PS4 Day One sold out weeks ago. Most retailers report a 3:1 ration for pre-orders in favor of the PS4.
Ps4 day ones sold out a weeks ago where?
Xbox one in the uk is almost sold out everywhere and PS4 is nearly there. The PS4 only sold out the end of last week and xbox one has limited stock but still has their work cut out.
MS won't be cheaper, and won't have that year to year and a half lead on store shelfs, so really they can't edge out playstation. Seeing as they didn't beat them with those things. PS3 beat 360 and PS4 will beat XB1
PS3 only catch up cause msft Turned a bit casual With no hardcore games for the last 2 years.
@iron-spider I'm willing to give it till the end of the console life cycle, and I'm sure that what I said today will hold true. And btw I started gaming way back in the early 80's on an Atari been at it for 30 years... Totally off topic anyone else think drowning pools song "one finger and a fist" is about Atari 2600
dont forget that ps2 crushed xbox as well. they should name their next console the xbox bronze. @pete007 yeah turning on their fan base did hurt them. @iron_spider will you be willing to admit that xb1 isnt that good at the end of this gen when it is still in 3rd. my guess no you and all the other xbox fans will just by like its only in 3rd because of all you sony fanboys.
@ ironspider Well lets jus ponder if they released the same year. How would the numbers look 4 years ago. M$ always threw out how they are the best seller year after year. I will give them that.... But only in the U.S. Worldwide they were getting slaughtered year after year. Its called math.1+1 =2 not 4. Every chance they got they were bragging on how they are outselling ps3 but mysteriously their behind in sales. How about we take away the rrod fiasco. Xbox360 sales initially are lower than that. Most of you guys repurchased the system again. So please lets leave the sales part out for now on. You guys have nothing to hold you're argument anymore. Ps3 sold more worldwide than xbox360 point blank. Its cool to be a fanboy. Everybody on n4g is a fanboy of something Wether its sports, cars, music, or actors. But being a mindless fanboy is another.
And ps3 fanboys were more delusional like the PS4 ones will be.
I am waiting to see the impact the TV features and Kinect 2 have.....if any at all. Could it be the niche that draws people? I do still think that Microsoft forgot the main reason for success last generation........cheapest entry price to pay the yearly 3rd party games.
Very true. I don't think TV will be very big. Most gamers don't subscribe to cable unless they live with their parents. We have Netflix, Hulu, and various other ways to watch our shows now. Even DVD/Blu-ray. It's cheaper than cable. Torrenting is pretty popular, too, I hear. ;) The Wii U already has TV features. It's not a bad app, actually. I like talking to other people on the Miiverse about my favorite shows. That being said, I rarely do it. It's just a waste of time to turn on the Wii U when I can simply turn on the cable box.
Well said, WorldGamer! Bubbles, too. With Sony and Microsoft at each others' throats, we reap the benefits! I'm getting a PS4, too, by the way. It's just incredible that no matter which system you choose, you'll have tons of games to play on launch day. Quality games!
I know how M$ can edge out Sony...Get the [email protected] out the gaming industry and focus on windows!!
We have gotten so many good things from MS: hardrives, online multiplayer games, Indy markets, and now we are going to download the games instead of going to the store for it. And yes Indy games are the first DRM games. And now the cloud. If its up to Sony, we will be playing single plaiting game. And yes, before you say it the PC had it, but MS brought it to the console. We need them both: Sony and MS.
MS is not known for giving free stuff but if they give 2 free yeas of Xbox live with the purchase of every console to upset the price, I think people will react positive to the news. Sony already gives away some goodies.
I think it's pretty clear that the gamers have spoken. If it was just one story about how well the PS4 is doing. Then it would be a different story. But it's not, it's everywhere, every poll, selling out here and there, etc.
They have to prove that they have huge blockbuster exclusives that will SPAN the lifetime of the console not be good and have only 3 series that are huge hits. They need to prove they have games not just quality but quantity Nintendo and Sony for the past 2 generations have done the exact opposite of Microsoft and proved over and over they have exclusives that are diverse and last the console span.
For overall entertainmrnt value and a butt load of features the x1 has the ps4 beat except in price. Consumers that are buying on price only will favor the ps4. When it comes down to the better looking games and graphics the x1 wins that category. The final gpu for the x1 will support dx3d and dx 11.2 with GCN2.0
Where do you get your false information from?
He makes it up. @fridge you do know that Sony has lots of apps and entertainment features also, the big difference is they don't stick them behind a pay wall, for instance you don't need PSPlus to use your Netflix account
To be fair the XB1 does appear to out do the PS4 in features but spec wise not so sure and obviously price. And lets assume those features work the way they were demonstrated at the press conference.
Simple, Google xbox one dx 11.2 and xbox one GCN 2.0
"UPDATE: This article initially stated that DirectX 11.2 is an "exclusive to Xbox One & Windows 8.1". However, it has since been brought to our attention that the technology may also be available on other next-gen consoles." http://www.videogamer.com/n...
Yeah ok lol
@Frigid Only you and your order believes this bull. You guys are starting to sound like an occult. Lol I don't know why I even bother. This guys is obviously crazy.
Lmao at you so much denial for knowing the truth.
Really wish we were talking about games, diversity in genre and play types, rather than specs.
Don't bring that silly stuff in here. Talking about games on a video game site? Blasphemy!
I agree. Project spark looks pretty cool.:)
Simply put... not possible.
Anything is possible, just bring on the exclusives.
It'll interesting. Imagine if Microsoft were to go after quality development teams and release exclusives as often as Sony has been in the past three years! We'd have a console war of epic proportions on our hands. I, for one, hope that happens. They have the money to do it.
that won't be possible for 8 months to a year. and the only thing that can and will change the minds of the people/consumers, is actually getting their hands on it and experiencing it for themselves. it has to make sense to people before they can go along with it. the Xbox one had an early coming out event, but the final product will be no different from the Xbox 360's success (after 8 months too a year) word of mouth started the drama (starting with the words from the mouth of Microsoft employees) and word of mouth is what's gonna make it a success
That was a level-headed and sound response. Not sure why you're getting disagrees.
A huge advertising budget wouldn't hurt it's sales either. Otherwise, while your comment is sound and logical, the 360 sold quite well, and had a lot going for it. While current general attitudes towards it aren't going to be the end all be all to how well it sells, it is pretty apparent that many core gamers aren't latching onto the system, so that initial 8 months worth of buyers won't really be there to talk up the system. Either way, I doubt the system is doomed, but MS does have an uphill battle to face against a competitor who is making all the right moves so far.
.... 1.) Killer Kinect game to show off all the new capabilities – free download on day one. 2.) Xbox Live free for one year. 3.) 2 free games per month – free content is good. 4.) A revised Family sharing plan. 5.) A game which actually shows the benefit of the cloud in real terms. ============================= == None of this would compel me to buy an X1, as the Kinect requirement is an overall non-starter for me. Live subscriptions should be scrapped altogether in this day and age but this is just my opinion. There's no way I would pay for it.
I was considering getting an Xbox and PS4 this gen. But M$ screwed that up. I am determined not to buy one now just to show them they can't try to screw us gamers then retract it and act like it never happened. Plus, all my friends whom were previously Xbox only have switched to PlayStation 4, so that's where I'm going.
Ms wasn't trying to "screw" over gamers, they saw a business model that works very well on pc and tried to apply it to the console format. Sure it was a bad idea but i seriously doubt they had malicious intent. Screwing over your customers isn't a very good way to be successful. I dont think they should apologize just because they made a choice we didnt like, especially after changing it based on our feedback.
Start by getting rid of Kinect. Make Live free. Sell it at the same price as PS4. It might get you closer.
So the premise of the article is that the best way to ensure sales is to give away a bunch of freebies? Sounds like the author has a lot of faith in the value of xbox one
To me, the damage has been done for Microsoft. The reversal, in the grand scheme of things made a difference, but a lot of people still don't want one. MS is going to have to do some serious damage control for a long time. BUT... I do think this will be interesting to watch over the years. With Steve Ballmer now being the new Xbox boss, Xbox fans will be in for an interesting ride-most likely a bad one. I'm still thinking they'll put back in the DRM for the Xbox One, when they sell enough units. Think about it? For weeks on end, they were trying to convince everyone that this DRM actually benefited them. It was only till they saw the money coming out of their pockets from the pre-orders that they reversed. They could also role off that patch, whenever they want. Sony confirmed none of these DRM and used game restrictions would happen at the reveal of the PS4. They don't have a day one patch. Sony also has the upper hand with the focus on games. It'll be fun to watch to say the least.
If they do decide to do the drm again at least time it would be optional. By that I mean they came up with a patch so the system could work offline and if they wanted to revert I'm sure they would have to do another software patch which of course customers don't have to download. I'm not a fan of their actions either I just felt it would be fair to point this out although if they did flip 180 again new customers wouldn't have the choice to ignore any patches
I should've explained better. They can make the patch that puts back in the DRM mandate without anyone knowing or just role it off themselves, seeing as anyone who owns a working Xb1 will need to have internet when they first buy it. Most likely the second one.
I wanted to give MS a chance. I could have been onboard with the XBOne, but rather than win me over, the reveal and everything after it did more to make me doubt Microsoft than I already did. If they'd reversed the contents of their reveal and E3 conferences- and if they'd never said anything about the mandatory connection- I'd want an XBO. Well, I'd be FAR more receptive towards getting one. But reality is reality, and the reality is that they turned me off from their console.
"I wanted to give MS a chance." That's like a Republican saying they wanted to give Obama a chance.
All I know is that microsoft execs need to take that kinect out before I make an investment. Last generation they came out with the kinect and the core gaming support dried out. Why? because they wanted the mommies of the world to buy it and play it with their 3-5 year olds. This time around, they even forgot about gamers when they bloody announced the thing. We came in second to the casuals, TV watching, sport jockey crowd. And now they have the kinect bundled in the box. If that doesn't tell you where they want to go with this ship, then I don't know what will. My PS4 is already pre ordered, so I say to heck with these corporate, greedy, non gamers, I'll be playing my games. they can do what they want.
Right on, brother
