Why do we play Video Games?

Why do we play video games? And are they are good influence in our lives? It’s probably a question which has been asked many times before, but it is one I have often thought about myself. Everyone has their own reasons why they enjoy playing video games, hence the wide variety of different genres and types of games on offer. But there a few things every gamer has in common when it comes to this question. I believe they play a major role in our lives and more often than not, they have a positive effect on us as human beings. (Culture)

No one asks why we watch TV or movies. Or stare at paintings, etc.

A very well made game can surpass even the best of those other forms of entertainment. Personally, the only other form of entertainment that I haven't replaced with gaming, is reading books, experimenting with cooking, and listening to music.

Edit: Also, LOL at the lasy in the background of the picture above who's jealous of the guy playing his game. Guys, find a girl who can enjoy gaming too, or else forget it. You can't have someone getting jealous of your hobbies. Trust me, if it wasn't games, she'd be jealous of your friends, your goals, your TV watching time, your fascination wit sports, family members your close to, etc. Find someone who like what you like to. Don't blame the hobby, blame the insecure hater who can't find their own interests (instead of hating on the hobbies that YOU happen to like).

I read an article once that said we play games because it helps us fulful maslows pyramid of needs. Apparently they make us feel accomolished and self actualized and such which makes sense with how passionate some people are about leaderboards and gamerscores... I just play for fun though personally

To escape the misery and boredom of life by entering a world of interest, excitement, and ideals.

it's interactive entertainment.
because it's an amazing hobby. Because I can break free of real life limitations. Because In video games, I can live out different lives, experience different worlds. I can be a God, or a fortune hunter, or a superhero, or dragonslayer. I can steal a car without going to prison or I can can survive a fungi epidemic in an apocalyptic wasteland. I can build beautiful worlds out of grass, glass cardboard or plastic, I can be the last line of soldiers standing while fighting off aliens, avoiding human extinction at all costs or I can bring the world to it's knees after slaying all Gods...

Why wouldn't I wanna do that? :P ugh I'm such a geek >_<

Because they are fun and entertaining.

I really don't think there is much more to it than that, but hey I can't speak for everyone.
MeatAbstract  +   945d ago
Because it's a form of entertainment and we as humans enjoy being entertained. The difference for gaming if that it is interactive entertainment and therefore isn't as passive as say, watching a film or TV.

danthebios  +   945d ago
Its entertainment, hobbies and fun unless you play games 24hours straight everyday then something is wrong lol if there is a person like that he or she should not forget to exercise, simple, just go on a treadmill and walk for two hours straight while playing game is that even possible...?
