The Last of Us isn't the solution to sexism in games, but it's a start

EuroGamer: "Women, eh? You can't live with 'em, you can't stick 'em in a video game without being criticised for dressing them in a metal thong, giving them skills called 'Feminist Whore' or marketing the return of gaming's biggest female icon as one giant rape fantasy. What a crazy world we live in.

At least things have improved since the days of Custer's Revenge. Over the last 20 years, the number of video games starring women protagonists has risen to almost four."

Mirrors edge is a good game

CrossingEden1907d ago

a good game with good character design, unlike say drakenguard whatever -_-

ChickeyCantor1907d ago (Edited 1907d ago )

The fact we are trying to praise female characters in video games IS sexism. If we just accept the fact that both men and women can play equal roles in stories then we don't have the need to remind everyone about sexism in game, it will only continue to excist this way.

PrimeGrime1907d ago (Edited 1907d ago )

Took the words right out of my mouth. Thank you.

Kos-Mos1907d ago

Ok mister, give me your explanation of the word sexism, because I thin k you`re a child on this topic.

ChickeyCantor1907d ago (Edited 1907d ago )

Oh god, it's one of you...

Every one pack up, this place is about to turn sour.

Storytelling in games is only going up, not down. The standards are being set higher and higher. Strong female characters were introduced in plenty of games already. The fact people are putting so much emphasis on female characters only shows that this topic isn't going to change. And people like you aren't helping.

Sexism simply put is a prejudice / discrimination / stereotype based on one's gender.

For example:
A woman should always be a damsel in distress.
A male should be brave and bold and it's his obligation to save said woman.
(Sexism goes both ways and is NOT exclusive to females).

Simply because female characters have boobs, people tend to make an issue out of it because society has set the standards of what a man should do and what a female should be.

Suddenly a woman who can gun her way through several crowds of enemies is so damn thought provoking, cause boobs. She is portrait as the typical male hero...The horror. A woman should be portrait helpless and needs a man to save her, right? But when a guy does it: "Dudebro high 5, pew pew pew".

People really need to get over themselves and stop putting so much emphasis on gender. Instead the focus should be put on storytelling. If the story stinks, the characters will be bad regardless of their gender. Yes, stereotypes are applied. But that also counts for male characters. If the story writing is done well most of the main characters will play a great roll. Whether it be male or female.

Sexism is by no means a difficult concept. And the fact you're calling me a "child" only shows how pretentious you really are.

Kos-Mos1907d ago

You know sexism is discrimination, and if praising female characters in video games is sexism by your understanding, then you`re a child who don`t understand this. Life is much about different genders. Men turns on by woman. Woman turns on by men. This is the way of life. But do you discriminate a gender just because you like to watch a gorgeous one in video games? No, of course not, you follow your instincts. If you say all women/men should be like that, then you discriminating.
Don`t challenge me on this topic because I could go on for a very long time. I`m looking forward to your reply because you WILL REPLY ME. I know that you feel hurt by this comment, because it makes you feel uncomfortable. Truth hurts sometimes, don`t it?

"You know sexism is discrimination, and if praising female characters in video games is sexism by your understanding, then you`re a child who don`t understand this"

The fact we have to praise it, is sexism on itself. That's the problem. Telling me that I don't understand it because you're missing the point doesn't make you right.

"Men turns on by woman. Woman turns on by men. This is the way of life."

What is your point? Males get turned on by males too, so do women getting turned on by other women. Someone might be jacking off to the cow in MGS4. What is your point?

"But do you discriminate a gender just because you like to watch a gorgeous one in video games? No, of course not, you follow your instincts. If you say all women/men should be like that, then you discriminating. "

Are you even trying to make a point here? Are you even trying to comprehend the topic at hand?

"Don`t challenge me on this topic because I could go on for a very long time. "

I think the only challenge you have right now is trying to figure out what you're talking about.

" I know that you feel hurt by this comment, because it makes you feel uncomfortable. Truth hurts sometimes, don`t it?"

What truth? The fact that I believe in equality? The fact that I think people shouldn't view everything from a male perspective and shape what a female character should be? The fact that we shouldn't even be discussing this in 2013?

Kos-Mos1907d ago

Haha. You`re tripping.

ChickeyCantor1907d ago

"Don`t challenge me on this topic because I could go on for a very long time. "

^ I'm sorry I can't read you over all the garbage that you're producing on my screen.

cpayne931907d ago

I'm struggling to decide if you are trolling or mentally ill. That comment you wrote has no logical connection to whatever argument you're trying to make.

Kos-Mos1907d ago

...garbage? I know how my comments makes you feel. Truth hurts for you. Sexism is not for you to discuss unless you`re supervised.

ChickeyCantor1907d ago

You still have not explained what this truth is.

" unless you`re supervised."
I seriously hope you're trolling. You are far more delusional than a crazy fanboy on this website.

Kos-Mos1906d ago

You haven`t answered my killer arguments properly. And stop with the trolling bullshit, just because someone is smarter than you and disagree with you doesn`t make him a troll. I have had my arguments, you totally fell off, you didn`t understand so if you want to proceed you need to get your ass out of your sofa, because you`re that kind. Order a flight ticket to my home country and we`ll se what will happen.
Or stay home and study your sexism. Might be that you`re a little confused.

Hicken1906d ago

You don't have any arguments.

You called someone a child about the subject, but your comments thus far have indicated a more immature understanding of the subject that the one you addressed.

Simply put, sexism is discrimination based on gender. But it's not just about perpetuating overly "negative" stereotypes; it's also about maintain overly "positive" ones.

A woman in sexy attire is not inherently sexist, yet that is the complaint immediately whenever a scantily clad female appears in a game. Who cares if she's otherwise exactly the same as a stereotypical feminist? She can be the strongest, most independent woman ever, but she'll never be respected as a character because a bunch of idiots jumped to conclusions based on her clothes.

At the same time, though, we can't suddenly praise a woman for being portrayed WITHOUT a hint of sexuality or sensuality. Because that sends the message that THAT is how a woman should be.

And there's no such thing. There is no archetype that defines what a woman should be; the same is true for a man. Marcus Fenix is no more a man than Endrance(don't know him? look him up).

You haven't proven yourself smarter than anyone.

Possible Spoilers here...

Even though we played through the majority of the last of us as Joel, I felt it had a nice dynamic where it starts as Joels story, but by the end of it, it very much becomes ellies origin story.

Joel ends up relying on Ellie more than she relied on him at the beginning.

If they were to do a sequel and I had my way, I'd have a grown ellie, with no sign of joel. Not even a mention of him. But there will be moments where ellie will sit with a guitar and play, and the music she plays will flesh out what may have happened between her and joel.

I think thatd be really cool but only because I have this awesome image of ellie during sun set walking up a ruined street with a six string in tow :P

At time's I'd prefer no sequel, or maybe just some short stories here and there about stuff that happened in 20 years since outbreak in different parts of the world.

I don't want sequels to ruin the original, but I always do want to see what more can be done in this universe... I've said it before but im really on the fence with that one :P

But this game was definitely a step in the right direction on how to portray REAL women in video games, and I honestly do think this game was more Ellies story at the end, and I loved that :) There was a nice seamless shift there and it started around the time they reach Tommys
