Injustice wasn't the first game like that, there was obviously Mortal Kombat vs DC universe, Marvel vs Capcom series, Marvel Super Heroes and even before that there was Justice League Task Force (for the Sega Genesis) ...

On topic, what do you call PS All-Stars Battle Royale or PS Move Heroes (that was sort of the point of the game =P)? That is as close to your example of Injustice as you're ever going to get.

Agree with most of these verdicts, but I think Ezio would beat Faith if he got to use that apple-thing.
