Games are making me miserable, but I like it

An opinion piece from casually-addicted.net showing why narrative in games are becoming more realistic and depressing for the gamer

***contains spoilers for Mass Effect 3, The Last of Us and The Walking Dead: The Game***

"Around fifteen years ago, I used to spend my nights grinning from ear to ear, sending Sonic spinning from one badnik to the next while collecting every ring in sight with my lightning shields. The eleven year-old me spent time playing games when really, I should’ve been getting a good nights rest before school. At times I’D turn up a yawning mess as my late night session’s on the latest Sega game was affecting my education – not that I cared." (Mass Effect 3, PS3, PS4, The Last Of Us, The Walking Dead - A Telltale Games Series, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

I'm just a miserable b******* anyway

What does 'b*******' stand for?

I cried during Kingdom Hearts and Shadow of the Colossus endings. But it was during cinematics. The Last of Us is the first game that had me crying while playing. I never thought that would happen, but it did. Another reason for me not to ever forget that game.

I never invest emotionally in games I just want everyone to die in them for my own fun I have never cared about any character they are just there for me to exploit and toy with.

Hooray?

Is there a reason you're telling us this or do you just want to share?

"I just want everyone to die in them for my own fun"

If that's the only reason you play games then I'm speechless.

*SPOILER ALERT*

when joel left at the end of the last of us i was shaking with fear just hoping ellie was in the back of the car X(
famoussasjohn  +   292d ago
Or when you're at the university and the last bit where Joel gets shoved off the railing. Worst 15 minutes ever to see if he actually died or not. :(

ENDING: (Do Not Read)
---------------------
i loved this game so much
it don't feel like the same old sh1t we get with every game
at the end the hero save the day and move on

joel acted like what a humen would act in real life he's not a superhero...he can get as selfish as any one
it's not his job to save the day or the world...... i my self question his mental stability and mine too
because if i were him would i do the same or let her die to save the world ?! ....i really don't know
what would you do guys ?!
and also yes ...the last part when he try to make every thing look cool and ok was really disturbing too.....but it look like this will hunt him for the rest of his life

need to play again *Droooooool*

EDIT: that's the thing @Harry
i don't know if i can call him bad or not
because if i were him i would have done the same thing

it really not something we see every day

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Yeah I thought the ending was perfect.
After that last cutscene with joel and ellie and the credits started to roll I just sat back and thought...wow....I'm not sure how I feel about that. An that was just the coolest thing. It's like Joel becomes the bad guy but you have to question whether you would have done the same in his shoes. I like the way it just gives you the ending like that. Here it is now deal with it.

@Ezz2013
"because if i were him would i do the same or let her die to save the world ?! ....i really don't know, what would you do guys ?!"

I think i will done the same as Joel too: save Ellie. I mean, i don't want to live alone without people i care in the world full with crazy canibalistic people like David roam around hunting and killing normal people.

Not to mention crazy military government who killed their own people without blinking an eye instead of protecting them. So the world can rot for all i care, but as long as i have people i care / love beside me, i think i will survive. I knew that sounds naive but that's my answer about Joel decisions to save Ellie and his perceptive about the world.

No game will ever top The Last of Us.
Destrania  +   291d ago
I will mostly agree with that. It's going to be incredibly difficult to top, if that's even possible.
plaZeHD  +   291d ago
What about it's sequel?
Ezz2013  +   291d ago
i don't think it will top it too
unless they do some crazy things

we will see

My review will follow when I finish the game about how the game borrows from many games to achieve its whole but, despite it being a relatively commonplace view, it is still a ludicrous view that games can't necessarily get better, not least from Naughty Dog's own hands.

It's a bit like looking at cinema and saying 'horror films won't get any better than Psycho'. Maybe not if you like a certain aesthetic and the freshness of the genre at that time but otherwise there is always a new generation around the corner with potentially equally capable hands and minds if they know how to have one foot in the past and one foot in the future.
