How Sony applied the lessons of the past in designing the PlayStation 4

Sony’s PlayStation 4 was designed with considerable input from game developers. And it was made to simplify process of designing high-quality games, according to PS 4 architect Mark Cerny. In a speech at the Gamelab game conference in Barcelona, Spain, Cerny said that Sony went out of its way in this generation to win over influential game developers as it pitched them their ultimate game machine. I love Mark Cerny. I really do. But please stop creating articles about the same presentation that he did. We've had about a dozen articles based on the same thing, which has caused a lot of N4G members to watch the actual video. No more until some actual news (notice the word "new" in "news") comes out.

Its funny, obviously Sony never wanted to lose money and they never wanted PS3 to go through its growing pains, but as sublime as the PS4 looks right now, it was literally born from its predecessor's faults. It likely wouldn't have checked off EVERY single thing on the list, had PS3 not experienced such key struggles. It's just kinda wild to see that Sony has done every little thing correctly with PS4 thus far.

Fanboy crap aside I would love to see Microsoft's side of this. Hearing his story makes me want to support the ps4 more because I feel like I know him more as a person. Microsoft's continues to feel like a money grabbing robot

Microsoft had this type of presentation with the Xbox 360. But with Don Mattrick running the show (rumor he's leaving MS) I doubt we will see this type of presentation. It will probably go something like this; Don wants Kinect, Don wants DRM, Don wants profit per console sold, if you question Don off to the call center you go.

It seems Mark Cerny really helped out Sony and could of been the single reason why Sony opted for simplicity instead of complex hardware. Glad Cerny came on board to offer an helping hand

It looks like the PS3 beginning fell and hit MS and Nintendo. Nintendo has no advertising and games. Microsoft says deal with the price and policies are crazy out of control(well PS3 didn't really have the policy problems). PS4 turned everything around this time. It's going to be great times ahead. ^~^

So the company which takes what Microsoft did correct, and makes it better, isn't Microsoft.

That's odd for ya.

Kutaragi had so much to do with PS branding and dominance for a decade, over 2 generations, but unfortunately he had almost everything to do with SONY's laughable 06 e3 and unnecessarily painful launch for its users on ps3.

This is the 1st time a PS console is being designed by a westerner.. The collaboration between eastern & western designers & engineers is whats going to make PS4 the best nx gen console.. Its going to have support from both sides & will have a nice blend of features that will appeal to everyone.. I cant wait for it & Mark Cerny did a fantastic job with it.. Im so happy they went with 8GB instead of 4GB like they originally were going to do.. They wouldve got spanked i think, had they stuck with only 4GB of memory.. Oh well, they didnt & we havent even seen anything close to what this bad boy is capable of doing
