Legendary Pictures gives update on 'WarCraft' and 'Mass Effect' movies

XMNR: Movies based on video games is a trend that Hollywood keeps revisiting despite their less than stellar history. World of Warcraft and Mass Effect are two franchises that are currently in development at Legendary Pictures and CEO Thomas Tull gave an update Sunday on where both projects currently stand. (Culture, Mass Effect, PC, PS3, World of Warcraft, Xbox 360)

"We're not going to be the guys to screw up Commander Shepard. We're committed to it, but it has to be great or we're not going to do it. We're treading on sacred ground."

Well, at least he is smart enough to know how crazy it would be to try and condense what we can experience in Mass Effect into that short amount of time. Honestly, I wish they would skip ahead to the "not going to do it" part.

What makes the series great, to me, is not just the main story. It is the interaction with a multitude of characters, experiencing the conflict between species, their histories, the individual stories of the crew, and more (like actually taking part in the battle for the Citadel, instead of watching it in a theater). It is that combination of aspects that makes the games great in my eyes. I really can't see a film studio capturing this essence for the big screen (especially since so much of it was based on the player's interaction).

The only way they wont screw up Commander Shepard is if they use cgi and have Mark Meer do his voice still. It just wont work without him.

I only play as Femshep, so it'll be strange seeing a male Shepard.

Still, I'd rather they not bother at all.

There is no way you can properly, or even possibly, squeeze a 180 hour game into a 2 hour movie. Please don't waste our time.
