There Was a 'Severe Culture Clash' Between Microsoft & Rare - Former Rare Dev

NowGamer: "The culture changed and it began to feel more Microsoft and less Rare" says developer who used to work at the studio. (Industry, Rare)

A few days ago I was watching some Banjo Kazooie speed runs on Youtube, and I can't tell you how much I miss playing Rare games back in the day on my N64. I wish Rare wasn't tied with Microsoft so they could split from them and do what they love doing(which is making great games) instead of making Kinect games all day.
Gimmemorebubblez  +   794d ago
We still haven't really seen what they've been up to on the Xbone, to be fair.
Smoovekid  +   794d ago
More Kinect games.

If only Sony would have bought Rare. Imagine how great that would have turned out, I'm sure Sony would have gave them near total freedom and support. :o(

Rare needs to have a breakthrough title on the Xbox One. It's pretty sad what they've become over the years but Xbox fans are also partially to blame because Kameo and Viva Pinata were fun games but never sold that well. I did my part, I bought them (not Perfect Dark Zero).

I want to see them do something good besides Kinect only games.

We've seen what they've done on the Xbox 360. People hated Perfect Dark and B&K: N&B. I think some people liked Conker and Kameo. Then they worked exclusively on Kinect stuff. Now, Killer Instinct is announced, and they're not even fully working on it. Some other developer is helping them. It doesn't matter what they can do on Xbox One. They've been with Microsoft for almost, if not, a decade, and they haven't really put out any groundbreaking games since leaving Nintendo.

We can only assume that if Rare stayed with Nintendo, they would have made even more groundbreaking games in 5 years than their entire time at Xbox.

@buddymagoo - up untill recently, Sucker Punch were using a buddy's mo-cap studio.

Here's an example of how awesome Sony are

they bought Sucker Punch their own mocap studio, imagine how much that cost, along with all the fancy equipment like those f***loads of cameras, and the suits, and the little dot things

The answer to all of rare's problems is Conker 2

Plain and simple.

Microsoft is leaving millions on the table by not making that.

seriously rare could return to greatness if msoft just said. "make it" "its time"

do it

I think Rare have given some gems on the 360; Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, Viva Pinata (1&2), and BK Nuts and Bolts was pretty fun, it had a different twist on the series. Their Kinect games are the most enjoyable Kinect games, but I wish they would move away from the camera for a little while. IMO I would love to see a Kameo 2, or another Grabbed by the Ghoulies.

I have a breaking news update:

Did anyone think that the spirit of RARE wasn't crushed by Microsoft over time? Kameo? Pretty RARE-like. Viva Pinata (a game with MP)? Kind of RARE. BK: Nuts and Bolts, a game that was heavily about racing and other competitive MP elements? Not very RARE.

Kinect Sports? Not RARE.

People that say that Microsoft didn't have anything to do with the decline of RARE is a fanboy trying too hard. Go play Kameo. That is good old fashion RARE. The change came when XBL and Kinect was forced on them harder and harder.

Of course there was it shows in their games! One wanted to create the other wanted to rape! Poor Rare never stood a chance with the Terminal cancer known as Microsoft!

Yea something seems to have gone wrong with rare, all the focus is on kinect.. I have no problems with kinect at all I like what it can do so if I ever do buy a Xb1 and rare is still stuck with kinect I hope hey have a huge break through with a game..

I thought it would have been with ki but evn that was mostly one b another dev..

The cultural change was Rare was not allowed to make creative new games instead Microdorks wanted them to waste time on gimmicky Kinect titles that never did as well as the top games they were used to making. After a while you can kill someone's creativity by limiting them and holding them back.
NatureOfLogic  +   794d ago
They should've put more thought into who they would sell to, Instead of instantly selling out at the first sight of M$.
kewlkat007  +   794d ago
The things that sucks, well when a company is bought out of course they loose some of their creativity. When the staff eventually breaks up the name/company becomes a shell of its former self. RARE is just not the same RARE. It happens all the time when a company is swallowed up. Sony probably would of done better job if they bought RARE, because of the games that was on the PS1/2 at the time.
NegativeCreepWA  +   794d ago
Rare hasn't been the same since they split up before MS bought them, there's a reason Nintindo sold them. They made some great game for the 360, just not the type I like too play anymore.
NatureOfLogic  +   794d ago
The thought of Rare with freedom as Sony first party is incredible. Not doubt they would have more freedom.
Donnieboi  +   794d ago
I know right. I hope Sony buys Atlus too (since their also having problems woth their parent company (due to bankruptcy though)). Sony would never make them go mainstream, nor censor Atlus's controversial themes on religion, sex, gender roles, sexual orientation, and the spirituality. Also the violence, language, and controversy.

Sony would do them good. Also Rare too. I mean they clearly made the Conker game because they wanted to break away from the family-friendly mold (yeah they had Perfect Dark and K.I., but when Iwata came along as new Nintendo Pres, it was clear that he wanted an even more family friendly and casual console than ever before).

Now their stuck with MS. Seriously they should go to Sony, or just break free altogether. Maybe Ubisoft could be Rare's new publisher if they want a good multiplatform publisher who won't tie them down to a single console or force them to only make kid games or casual kinect games either.

Rare is no longer Rare. In 2007 the Stamper brothers left to create their own studio. They don't do much more than Kinect games since the bulk of the original studio left after they cashed their buyout check.

It wasn't long aftet this that Microsoft changed strategy and stopped buying out studios to bring in as first party developers. Instead they work with third parties to bring games to their platform.

Buying studios to make them first parties isn't giving them freedom.

Oh how I miss Rare that's my childhood right there Rare's N64 games! I'm still hoping for a Banjo Kazooie 3DS port since they did do Diddy Kong Racing DS years ago.
ThatCanadianGuy514  +   794d ago
Not surprised. All the top guys at Rare took their paychecks and cashed out as soon as MS bought them. They quit almost instantly.
cell989  +   794d ago
this all makes perfect sense, Rare was deprived of thier creativity the minute Microsoft bought them :( I loved Banjo Kazooie man!! I loved it!! I even killed my rental store bill, for keeping it for 3 weeks straight
Death  +   793d ago
When was Rare deprived of creativity? Have you seen their back catalog since 2002?
cell989  +   791d ago
viva piñata? Conker?
GusBricker  +   794d ago
I hope and expect for another Rare Xbox One game to be announced by MS at Gamescom, hopefully a new Banjo Kazooie.

I miss Perfect Dark here's hoping they bring it back.

Regardless of what happened behind the scenes they've turned out some superb games on Xbox, particularly Viva Pinata, and a lot of other work with NXE etc.

Looking forward to seeing Kinect Sports, whatever their other teams are doing, and of course the possibility of more classic franchises being revived!
Sugreev2001  +   793d ago
I can only imagine the fantastic games we'd see from this once mighty company,if they were given more freedom like in the 90s.
