EA's Wilson: Origin is not about transactions, it's about service

EVP Andrew Wilson talks to us about how he intends to “re-establish Origin as a service to gamers, not as a means to drive transactions.” (Andrew Wilson, EA, Industry)

The only function of Origin was to not have to share profits with Steam. Because of that it will always be seen and a complication and not a service.

I dont think I need to see your face to judge you -_-

Then where are the services ? i've seen none so far beyond selling me stuff

I think his point was that he wanted the service to get better in that respect.

I thought the interview was interesting. Good job.

Then that's TWO things it's not good at!

Your "service" is just a means of driving sales.
Doesn't help that your origin client is little more than a few extra clicks needed before playing the games I want to play.
And then there's Battlelog - a complete disservice.

"not as a means to drive transactions"

Were they not just selling BF3 for $5?
Pandamobile  +   489d ago
They did a week ago.

I thought it was about data mining your PC to record the name and useage of every piece of software and transmitting that data to EA. They are not required to maintain your privacy from that gathered data including medical information, if for example, you have a piece of software that calculates insulin dosing, they know you have diabetes and can share that with whomever they like.

I'll stick with Steam and GOG as my services. I'll never go near origin....

Do people actually use Origin?
Veni Vidi Vici  +   489d ago
They're forced to if they play on PC and want to play any EA game like BF3, Crysis 3, etc.
Eldyraen  +   489d ago
Only reason I have it.

I have gotten a few other games when they had the one "real" sale (picked up C2, DS2, Bulletstorm, ME2, etc for dirt cheap all at once and never seen a sale on par since, on Origin anyways).

Will they be charging 5 bucks a month in the future too? Just throw in a few free old games. Everyone will be happy!

By service, I hope you don't mean looking into my PC and scouring every inch for a game not from origin?
PerryCaravello  +   489d ago
I dont even know what origin is. Never used it, probably never will unless I play an EA game?
nikrel  +   489d ago
Sucks PC gamers are going to be missing out on Titanfall & BF4 and every other EA game because they want to force us to use Origin.

I haven't purchased another EA title once they introduced Origin.
Pandamobile  +   489d ago
That's your loss, really. Origin isn't really bad enough to warrant a boycott of awesome games.
SlapHappyJesus  +   489d ago
Agreed.
This whole "screw EA and everything their name appears on" thing is really tired and old.
All they are doing is, well, nothing. All that talk has not changed a thing except keeping those taking part from enjoying games they seemingly want to play otherwise.

I have a strong dislike for origin not because it is owned by EA. But because it creates a lot of hassle and Im still not used to it.

Whenever I think "I feel like playing a game" I instantly out of instinct open steam. Since origin everything's become scattered and less organized. I wouldnt mind Origin if it were optional for upcoming EA games. But this though is not reason enough to boycott their games.

Dont force us to use your service EA. Make us want to switch to it!
