The Zelda/Mario CD-i Games Are More Important Than You Think

In this week's Default Settings, all bets are off as columnist Alex Carlson revisits the horrors that are the Zelda and Mario games for the Philips CD-i. But are these bad decisions just stains on the franchises' legacies or are they something more, something that Nintendo needs to stop pretending doesn't exist? (Culture, Retro, The Legend of Zelda)

Ha! I was talking about this the other day when someone proposed Nintendo pair up with Sony. That's the other side of this fiasco - Nintendo banked on Sony and Kutaragi, but they couldn't negotiate licensing. They fell out.

Then Nintendo decided to continue with Phillips. Phillips was Sony's competitor, so they wanted to thumb their noses at Sony. Phillips had a CD idea too. The CD-i. And they had the license to make a few Nintendo franchises without approval. They were going to do a sequel to Super Mario World, but when *those* two fell out, they just said "screw it" and made these.

Honestly, I think it would be the best merger ever if Nintendo and Sony got together. Sony excels especially at leveraging its European studios for great games - its Japan studios do well too, most of the time, when it isn't The Last Guardian, but the addition of Nintendo would seal the deal for old-school gamers like me, against the Xbox, the PC, the Ouya, the iPad, etc.

But they won't. They're so frightened by what happened with the friggin' CD-i, when really, it's probably this guy's fault: a cutthroat lawyer who drove Nintendo's legal team for years. They won a little *too* much with Sony (that's not how negotiation works) and probably drove them out:
