Free Games: Maybe There’s Hope for Microsoft After All

Jed Pressgrove from Fate of the Game says: "This gesture from Microsoft, to me, is more positive than the company’s recent turnaround on DRM. The turnaround came from pressure applied by Sony and extremely negative word of mouth around the world about Microsoft’s horrible Xbox One policies. Praising Microsoft for the turnaround is like praising a man who finally decides to stop beating his wife." (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE, Xbox One)

ms aren't your friend, they're not buying you a sandwich...

So tired of the "you need to renew PS+ to keep the games" excuse. I mean, how long does it take you to finish a game? Also, I would rather get UC3 and Saints Row 3 (2 titles released in 2011) than AC2 (launched in 2009) and Halo 3 (2007).
The free games from MS will stop at some point (when the Xbox One is released I believe) Sony will still give you free games, even PS4 games

It's about value, not quality. You get more value from PS+, and while the XBL gold games may be good, that's not an excuse for giving your loyal fans who have been with your service for 10 years a 6 year old game. 6 year old games are cheap.
xHeavYx  +   486d ago
@GoldenMonkey34
The older the games are, the more of a change there is that you already played the game. I mean, who hasn't played AC2 by now?
hazardman  +   486d ago
What do you know. I for one think its a step in right direction no matter what games your getting. Im pretty sure with time the games will get better.
darthv72  +   486d ago
@heavy
umm...i haven't play AC2. Hell i havent even played AC1. At first the series didnt interest me but after trying out AC3 i have to go back and start from the beginning to get a better respect for the series.

And if one of those games in the series is a freebie...hey i wont argue with that.

jonboi24  +   486d ago

dazzrazz  +   486d ago
Yes it will end @ X1 launch and its only available to people who have gold sub
NihonjinChick  +   486d ago

Bashing your wife is a shameful analogy. Also, this is just another fanboy bait site, right now its so easy to say anything negative about MS to simply get hits, nothing more, nothing new added to the situation. No one really knows what either company will do down the road regarding DRM, but at least MS showed its hands, Sony only told you what you wanted to hear to capitalize and gain traction. The current model involving games sales will eventually burn out, and everyone knows that. You are delusional to think otherwise. The next year will be very interesting....
FateoftheGame  +   486d ago
Beating your wife is obviously wrong; screwing over consumers is obviously wrong. We shouldn't praise anyone for not realizing the obvious.

And how is this article negative about Microsoft? Did you actually read it? A preview is meant to be provocative and/or attention-getting, but it's not the entire article.
YNWA96  +   486d ago
Read it, get it, but a lot of unnecessary jabs, like the wife bashing..... I do not believe they were screwing the consumers, its just how the people who were not going to buy it anyway and unfortunately MS bottled it. I liked the way it was going to be, did not bother me... but thats just my opinion, which is no doubt not valid...
FateoftheGame  +   486d ago
From my standpoint, the analogy wasn't unnecessary and makes the point that I am strongly against anti-consumer policies. Now, if you liked the direction Microsoft was going in, fine, but you're not going to convince me to go easy on what the company was trying to do. On the other hand, I can still recognize that Microsoft can be a good company again - that's the entire point of this article.

And by the way, I was planning on buying the new Xbox before Microsoft went crazy. I've been very happy with my 360 for the last five years.
YNWA96  +   486d ago
It is a good analogy for the point you made, it just touches a nerve with my own personal experiences. As for games, I have an awful feeling some big publishers were behind the DRM issue, but stayed very quiet. I do not believe MS alone was behind this. I believe this is only the start as far as DRM is concerned.

Halo, you do realize Sony patented their version of the "wiimote" before Nintendo did, right? Look it up. There was a whole case and everything.

"if it wasnt for ms xbl psn would be trash right now"

You can't just jump to a conclusion with NO EVIDENCE. You're not very smart at all.
hazardman  +   486d ago
You do realize MS been messing with he cloud before Sony got Gaikai..
No_Limit  +   486d ago
PS Move = Wiimote
Home Beta = Second Life
Trophies = Achievement
LBP Karting = Mario Kart
PlayStation All-Stars = Super Smash Bros
Dual Shock = N64 rumble pack
Oh, Pay to play online = Xbox Live :)
Also, Keep it forever =/= loss your games after cancellation

Do I need to say more?

You don't lose your games when plus expires, they just become unavailable, sign up again and you'll get them back.
ZBlacktt  +   486d ago
No DRM NOW
No 24 hour check in NOW
Blu-Ray player NOW
People will look at buying it NOW

You should be thanking Sony for forcing MS to drop the control they had over the X1. Now you are free to game like all the rest.

Thank you Sony.

Does xbox 360 already use the cloud?
Also, Sony just happened to announce theres first, no one knows when the deals were actually made, but I will give you the free games on PSN+, but funny how you did not mention that Sony copied MS on paying for multiplayer.... why not?
bohemian 23  +   486d ago
Hey, if its free its for me. Except for STD's, if its free, I will give it a shot. I understand everyone has their loyalty for certain companies, but this is not a bad thing.
GDDR6_2014  +   486d ago
Actually pretty clever to keep people subscribed til xbone launch
GeisT  +   486d ago
Implying that xbox was in trouble to begin with. Xbox has better servers, exclusives, chat/multiplayer systems and deeper pockets than playstation and nintendo. If you say Xbox Live isn't as good as PSN then you have mental issues.
micky_21_uk  +   485d ago
I don't mind free games are free games :D and lucky for me never played Fable 3 and I never got round to fully completing AC2
