Miyamoto Says They Want To Leverage Capabilities Of Retro Studios Further

Mynintendonews:

Nintendo fans love Retro Studios so it comes as no surprise that a few were disappointed in the news that Retro is developing another Donkey Kong Country game, rather than a new entry in the Metroid franchise. Miyamoto says that Nintendo really wants to leverage the capabilities of the esteemed developer, as he says that they are a very capable studio.

Interesting to hear him say "as we've seen from the Metroid games" given that it's been announced they are working on Donkey Kong, and their last game was Donkey Kong.

I love Retro though, and look forward to whatever they are working on.

Goes to show that even Miyamoto feels that DK doesn't take advantage of their full potential.

They(Retro)really should've given Tropical Freeze to another studio, and worked on something that could truly show their power.

PopRocks3591616d ago

Yeah, why couldn't Monster Games do it? They did a pretty good job with the port of the 3DS game from what I heard.

Tunavenom1616d ago

Oh they have a powerhouse title cooking up in that studio alright. Retro was just getting their feet wet with this one.

Retro did say that they could only work on one small project and one big project at the same time. I don't think they ever said that DK country was the big project. Maybe they have another bigger project in the works. I mean they hired a ton of people recently and for what? DK country? I don't feel like that's right.

Nintendo will never reveal ALL of their top secret titles to us in one sitting. .

Wonder if their prepping Retro for a platformer type Metroid thus the DK games? (hopefully thinking i know lol) But who knows might get a better Metroid other M?

PigPen1616d ago

What that's a code wording for saying they want to buy Retro?

gamer421616d ago (Edited 1616d ago )

I thought they already own retro.

CaptainN1616d ago

They already own Retro Studios as well as Monolith Studios for those wondering!

PigPen1615d ago (Edited 1615d ago )

Nintendo acquired the company completely by purchasing the minority its holding stock. Retro Studios is not fully own but is first party developers for Nintendo.

Monolith Soft is completely owned by Nintendo.

CaptainN1614d ago

Actually by buying out the remaining stock they fully own Retro. They are a seperate division of Nintendo now.Being first party means Nintendo owns them.

Give StarFox to Retro. I bet they'll give the series the comeback it needs.

exfatal1616d ago

Give it to platinum games. Lol imaging some crazy game Nintendo, platinum, and retro. And it turns out to be Metroid X StarFox. I cant be the only one who wants this?

Donnieboi1616d ago (Edited 1616d ago )

No offence, but Hell no. I like Platinum games, but my first Star Fox was Starfox 64. That game actually had compelling characters and a deep, sad story (if u get the full ending).

Platinum games makes good action games, but they seriously need to get a story writer. Also, I don;t wanna see Star Fox get all goofy. Platinum made MG Rising (a series that should have been more serious) a bit goofy. They call it "style", but that style is persistent across all of their games--they never take into account that the game they are working on might not be in need of their odd quirkiness.

I'd much rather see Retro work on it. I think they'll capture the right mood.

exfatal1616d ago (Edited 1616d ago )

@Donnieboi No offense taking, I can see where you're coming from. i'd still love to see platiumn take on the series giving how fun their game is though, especially the action and replayabilty i feel if Nintendo was watching over them like they normally do their ips, they can keep the Starfox storytelling true, and platinums quirkiness to a minimum

kirbyu1616d ago

I want to see a Star Fox game I like.

Triforce0791616d ago (Edited 1616d ago )

They own Retro Studio's there 2nd party m8,like moonlith,and a few others.

Shok1616d ago

Monolith is actually first-party.

Triforce0791616d ago

Look 1st party 2nd party Nintendo have owned Retro for years and years.

Theyellowflash301616d ago

Monolith Soft is a first party Studio.

lilbroRx1614d ago

Second party. Only internal devs for a company are first party. Companies they own that make games for them are 2nd party. Company they do not own that make games for them are third party.

Kevlar0091616d ago

It's interesting because when Retro first started out they were working on 3 or so games of no real specialty. Then Nintendo told them to stop all production, consolidate, and makes MPrime. Nintendo most likely didn't want to force Retro into doing something this turn around, to keep their relationship healthy.

A part of me wishes they made Metroid or a new IP, and the other part respects their decision and is glad DK is getting love near the beginning of the console. NIntendo EAD could've done it instead, but nothing will bring the past back.
