Sony beat Facebook… to Facebook

MCV: Sony's PlayStation division was tantalisingly close to spearheading the 'online social community' phenomenon – beating the likes of MySpace to the idea.

That's according to former Sony Entertainment President Chris Deering, who revealed to MCV that a secret Facebook-style web networking platform was being worked on behind-the-scenes by those responsible for launching PSOne – but was canned at the last minute.

In addition, a 'streamed PlayStation TV channel' was also trialled for PS2 back in 2002 – four years ahead of YouTube – but was also thrown out because of a global lack of interest in broadband.

Don't count out the gaming power of the 360. Sony makes too many bad moves. Microsoft's core value proposition is great AAA gaming not hardware this and walkman and PSP that and Blu Rays for all. Games. All it is is games.

Sonykids will yell RRoD until the end of time but when their framerates are stuttering and and colour unnaturally warm ... 360 will go down in history as the underdog that took the prize !

I will give out a big shout out to Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core which are both amazing. My PSP sat collecting dust for 2 years -> this could be the biggest comeback of the year, forget the PS3.

Microsoft's Xbox division is an epic FAIL. Prove me wrong.

to leave out Sony's successes and Microsoft's failures. Sony didn't get to where they are today by coming up with failing technology all the time. Playstation or Playstation 2 anyone? Nintendo should have joined with Sony when they had the chance. Imagine the system we would have by now!

Too bad it's usually not who thought of it first, but who actually did it first. It's great and all to sit back and say "oh yeah, we thought of doing that long ago..." but in the end it doesn't matter if you weren't the ones to actually do the work and bring it out. Or, at the least, patent it.

So many people in the world see commercials and say, "Hey, I thought of that!". Thank you to Sony for nothing in this article. lol

Remember, Phil Harrison stated this exact thing, and that Sony in Japan nixed it. This was right before they retired him.

Close only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades! Sorry Sony!

Well , they sure made the right decison's since PS1 & PS2 sold millions.

Regardless of what features it has anyway, they still have a strong line of game companies under thier wing that devolop games which sell's consoles.

Same with MS.
