Xbox One DRM Reversal Cuts Features, Requires One-Time Connection

You win some, you lose some. In changing its drastic Xbox One DRM policies today, Microsoft will actually be cutting some of the cooler features announced from the console. Everything's got a price, folks.
"There’s a few things we won’t be able to deliver as a result of this change," Marc Whitten, v.p. of Xbox Live told Kotaku, "One of the things we were very exicted about was 'wherever we go my games are always with me.' Now, of course your physical games won’t show up that way. The games you bought digitally will. You’ll have to bring your discs with you to have your games with you. Similarly, the sharing library [is something] we won’t be able to deliver at launch."

Update:

Update: Microsoft clarifies that the planned day-one Xbox One update, which Whitten told me, will "complete some of the software that won’t be there," is actually not a result of today's DRM policy change. Rather, it was always planned and will simply be required for playing off-line, among other things. Not a patch, they say. But, yes, your new Xbox console would have to connect online once in order to do the things Microsoft described today. And then you can keep it offline and play games without re-connecting to the Internet forever.

The story is too old to be commented.

LOL! The one off connection charge is to disenable the features? in hard ware 3-4 months from being shipped? WOW!

MizTv1557d ago

I just don't understand that?

JokesOnYou1557d ago (Edited 1557d ago )

No its just stupid....the reason it got changed was because of the initial complaints from real fans like me, but that was because they were not clear about the policy, they just announced:

"hey X1 will have used game drm"

So of course there was outrage by xbox fans but if they would have said from the very beginning:

"hey X1 will have used game drm, but you will be able to share your game library with 10 friends"

The reaction would have been much different because most xbox fans liked that idea.

Instead what happened is they reversed their decision because they never got the word out clearly to the fanbase since they said nothing of the game sharing policy at E3. A lot of fans never even knew about the game sharing aspect.

Listen X1 will still be great but this is a sad day because their policies were actually very forward thinking and were a welcomed differentiation between their competition, they changed something great for the masses to cater to the small minority that yelled the loudest, they should have just waited. I mean who really buys a X1 that doesn't have the internet? Seriously whats more telling is that the people complaining obviously have the internet....surely they weren't receiving telegram complaints from tribes in Africa. This decision was very shortsighted on their part. Even with drm at the time of this news X1 was and STILL is #1 on Amazon, yeah you can say the other consoles are all divided up but that doesn't mean that in total that they are higher than X1. At any rate it was just far to early to over-react to bad publicity but hell I guess I'm partly to blame since I gave negative feedback daily on forums myself, but again that's because the message was f-up.

sinjonezp1557d ago

All I have to say is I am still not buying your ish Microsoft. They said that the drm is in the technology. Well, just as quick as they flip flopped, they can employ their original policies at will. They change now so they can try and attract consumers again and as soon as they feel comfortable, they will make up some more outrageous claims to support the original strategy. At this point, Microsoft cannot win me over. No matter what they do. Its just sad that one day you say we are sticking to our guns and policies, and now you retract? Not a good look at all. And if you are a true gamer, I d not see how you can stand by microsoft or disagree with me or any others who feel they are just toying with consumers now; constantly feeding us irrational business strategies.

dmeador1557d ago

neare you serious? Then do 10 minutes of research beforeyou bitch. people took 30 min to complain about all this, but didn't take 10 to read into detail. you suck as a "fanboy".

And anyone who thinks they will force people to switch back are not thinking very clearly. MS did not expect the outpouring of whining from the net, now they know people can't handle what they had to offer.

Im much less excited for the X1 now, and will hold off preordering which i was going to do tomorrow.

DOMination-1557d ago

Honestly I think they should just delay the damn thing and release it properly next year if their solution requires a firnware update.

Gamer19821557d ago

The crazy things? The only defence MS fansites have had since the massive E3 fallout is this DRM stuff they have been twisting the 10 man sharing and the rest of it to make out how MS console will be better than the new PS4. Now the only differnce between the new consoles is the new xbox forces you to buy Kinect and comes at a higher price tag because of it of $100. The HDMI input is a nice feature but I think its more of a fad than anything as most people won't bother with it as all you can really do over current technology available right now is change the channel with your voice. People will get really bored with that really fast. I mean seriously how many people you see in the streets using siri anymore? Voice control isn't popular.

CRAIG6671557d ago

@JokesOnYou I couldn't agree with you more, hopefully they find a way to re-integrate the family plan in the future...

The_Con-Sept1557d ago

Listen. This is a big win for everyone. If Xbox can get away with something then other companies will follow. When you give a mouse a cookie ring a bell? We won. So shut off your fanboy sorrow switch and look at what everyone really accomplished.

DragonKnight1557d ago

@JokesOnYou: They didn't change things because of what you call the "vocal minority." Despite their assertions, Microsoft don't care about the Xbox community. You're talking about a company that were arrogant when their DRM were rumours, arrogant when they revealed the console, and arrogant leading up to and after E3. They were right, the community was wrong, and everyone would just have to "deal with it."

Microsoft changed their policies because the casual mainstream audience, people who don't normally look into these things, were being informed about it by their gamer friends, by gamestop, and the final blow was Jimmy Fallon. His show proved that Microsoft's anti-consumerism had reached the casual audience, a.k.a. Microsoft's REAL target demographic, and they were no more pleased with it than the core gaming community. Coupled with gamestop refusing to allow any more pre-orders of the X1, and Microsoft saw that the X1 would be dead on arrival all because of their arrogance and desire to strip control away from gamers.

And another thing, when an overwhelming majority of a "vocal minority" all say the same thing, and it also pisses off the casual audience, then that should be enough to tell even the most blind, apathetic Microsoft fanboy that Microsoft's DRM was wrong. No matter how they tried to sugar coat it.

BISHOP-BRASIL1556d ago

@JOY

You talk about how they changed something good for everyone in order to carter to a complaining vocal minorities, yet look at pre-orders before that... Stop being so self entitled, this had nothing to do with "real fans like you", but with every other potential costumer simply not buying it as every pre-order, preview and poll article pointed at exactly that. YOU are in the minnority.

A product's characteristics have nothing to do with fans for any company anyway, they're running a business, they see a need and create their vision on how to profit around it, in this case they came up with a DRM driven machine, but reaction showed their product was not going to be accepted as it was, so they changed it (hopefully) in time for somthing that would sell better. Simple as that.

No company will invest what MS had with Xbox to make or change a product for a minority, don't matter how much you loyal fans are willing to bend over, it's not economically sustainable.

"This decision was very shortsighted on their part. Even with drm at the time of this news X1 was and STILL is #1 on Amazon, yeah you can say the other consoles are all divided up but that doesn't mean that in total that they are higher than X1."

Hate to break it too you, but your #7 now and and Ps4 is #2. I know it changes daily, but overall the damage was done by MS, regardless both consoles will sellout at launch there is no doubt. But using Amazon top sellers as an argument is worthless.

indysurfn1556d ago

Am I the only person that caught this?
Okay at the start of this Microsoft fooled people by using terms. Like LEND(should have been check out/check in) lending. Now they are being successful by using the term:
"offline game". Did you catch that, if you install a "OFFLINE game" then you will not have restrictions, that is the condition.

What defines a "OFFLINE game" What if only one game has the label of offline game on it? Most likey candidate would be a turned based rpg.
Heck what percent of games don't have a component of online on 360 games right now? Microsoft almost required it with few exceptions.
If there is a term "OFFLINE game" as a condition. for you to not have to get online.

Then that is a out, for Microsoft to change nothing! Don't trust a company that keeeeeeeeeps making pot shots at your rights. And keeps adding names like "OFFLINE xbox one games", to fool you, otherwise they Fooled you twice! Are you going to let that happen?

Microsoft qoute:An internet connection will not be required to play OFFLINE Xbox One games....If they where not trying to fool you it would

read:An internet connection will not be required to play (any) Xbox One games. see the difference? I don't care if it drops to 199 It is still

taking away my used games rights!!! plus as I pointed out the DRM issue is conniving explained to fool us? This is what Microsoft meant by

they will make this CLEAR. (MORE TRICKY)
This could just be a feature on the back of the box. so if they dont make a offline box like they have a 'online multi player' capable box on the back of the disc it is okay to still drm you to there hearts are content!!!

Makes it easier to turn them on later with a future update.

RememberThe3571557d ago

It's still bullshit. They had no clue what gamers really wanted and had clue how loud we get when we don't like something. Now, since DRM was so much apart of this console they have to take out features just to disable it? Thats weak. This is Sony '06 right here.

I'll get an Xbone when the price drops and they remove that stupid camera. I like the media features and I'm sure it'll get some pretty dope exclusives. I'm happy they removed the built in DRM, cuz I was going to avoid this console all together.

dmeador1557d ago

@remember Think a little bit. Without the checks, they can't implement the features they wanted. I'm sure you'll get it

kreate1557d ago (Edited 1557d ago )

i think they should of launched it the way it is and see how things go during the first 6 months or so in the market.

the outcry could of been just a fluke and people might of just accepted things the way they are.

changing it around 6 months later or so couldnt hurt too much after observing the market at that time. now they gonna wonder, what if.....

but since they changed it already, i have a feeling they gonna bring it back as soon as 10 million consoles or so sells.

SilentNegotiator1557d ago

preorders were higher for Ps4 at Gamestop and Ps4 had 2nd place, along with about 5 other spots in the top 10 for gaming stuff on Amazon.

It wasn't just about outcry; this was about clear indications of losing out to the PS4.

RavageX1557d ago

A FLUKE? People all over the world voicing their issues with something is a fluke?

Gorilla_Killa_X1557d ago

I agree. I think at some point they will reenable it. But you never know.

BallsEye1557d ago

Who cares, I have said this from day one but all digital games should function as they originally intended. But all physical copies should work as it did with the 360.

Not a problem at all.

whoyouwit041557d ago

no it's not but you know sony fans will make it one. Anyways, hers my question; with 24 hour check in there is no longer a need for kinect so would it be safe to say they will announce a second sku at GDC.

Foxgod1557d ago

Doubt it, kinect has nothing to do with Online gaming.
Kinect is used for motion gaming, which can be online, but doesnt have to be.

creatchee1557d ago

The 24 hour check wasn't for Kinect - it was for DRM.

ziggurcat1557d ago

i don't think kinect had anything to do with the online check-in, and as far as anyone knows, it's still a requirement to operate the console.

if they drop that nonsense, and allow a HDD upgrade, i'm sold.

bcrazy181557d ago

@ziggurcat

They've already said the Kinect can be turned off so no it's not required for the system to run. I even heard somewhere that you can turn the microphone as well and turn the system on manually. Now, that hasn't been confirmed but I'm sure it's true.

Nafon1557d ago

Those are my thoughts exactly. These "features" aren't possible without DRM. You can't "bring your library with you" without DRM, because then your friends could all install the game from your disk and you could all play the same copy of the game at the same time.

Basically, The disc should be required to play, or you should buy it online. You buy the disc to play the game on the disc. you don't want a disc? don't buy one! buy it online! lol

MoreRPG1557d ago

I don't know how some people find this hard to understand.

MoreRPG1557d ago

This is they way it should've been since day one. Limit the sharing features only to digital copies and leave the physical copies alone.

Garbanjo0011557d ago

yeah if only they would actually do something logical for once.

irokster1557d ago

@bcrazy18

I heard the sky is green man. Now, that hasn't been confirmed but I'm sure its true!

We won .they backed down .gamers of the world unite

UNGR1557d ago

Now if only gamers could learn how to boycott games properly. Then we'd really win.

rawshack1557d ago

Its show we do have the power in some degree to make changes .they only did a 180 becouse they could see they have gave next gen to sony on a siver platter

RememberThe3571557d ago

Theres no "some degree," we are the industry. Where our dollars go dictates what direction this industry goes. Our dollars went to Sony and MS shit themselves.

porter4701557d ago

Its no over yet, what about the no self publishing policies? and how about that pay wall that's still standing for FB, Twitter? What about charging for patches, needing to pay to play FTP games.

IcicleTrepan1557d ago

so basically you just want a PS4 but with an X logo on it right

DaPrintz1557d ago

What about the cloud computing they brought up a lot as well?

TXIDarkAvenger1557d ago

Ha if only PS4 and One gamers could unite >.>

Meanwhile Wii U and PC are just chilling.
