Molyneux: Microsoft in "wasted opportunity" with lacklustre ecosystem for indies

22Cans' Peter Molyneux has criticised Microsoft for their rather poor 'ecosystem' for supporting indie and small developer projects, adding it "drives me crazy." With Windows and Xbox you'd think they'd go all out.

He remarks it's a "wasted opportunity" that Microsoft doesn't foster an ecosystem combining the two in a "truly encouraging way." He understands the need for secrecy because of leaks, but "it doesn’t seem right".

Molyneux says they've tried their hand at encouraging indie development but it doesn't seem to be in their nature, as evidenced by their latest announcements at E3.

This is a man who was a great advocate for the original Xbox and 360, so him saying what he said is really worrying. MS if you don't listen to your core fans, at least listen to what Molyneux has said, it rings with so many truths.

the mans nuts nobody should listen to him, sadly hes washed up and never delivered anything he promised, hes the last person that should be pointing figures.

Molyneux makes a great point about the core audience getting smarter, if not quite in the way he meant. Microsoft tried to do something and the core audience saw through it immediately and wanted answers to questions.

No answers came and the core audience knew what that meant. It's sad because I think the idea of always connected isn't inherently a bad one, but if you are going to make that jump you can't bullshit the core audience. You have to have a plan that excites people of the possibilities.

The core audience understands that we are moving towards digital and with that will come a complete change in how consumer rights work in regards to ownership. There are certainly a lot of downsides, but there are also positives. If Microsoft hadn't underestimated the intelligence of their core audience, who knows how these changes could have been perceived.

I'd say discarded more than wasted. MS is more interested in the multi-media hub aspect of One than gaming.
