PC Zone previews Fallen Empires: Legion

Founded by former members of Tribes creators Dynamix, in one fell swoop GarageGames managed to make an entire part of the internet cry "Will it work in Firefox?" in unison by announcing the spiritual successor to Starsiege: Tribes in the form of browser-based team FPS Fallen Empires: Legion.

Tribes was once the glitterati of pixel-perfect teamplay and whizzing down green hills, and its fans are rabid. Far from resigning himself to a squalid life of making a knock-off 2D monsterpiece, Project Manager Tim Aste assures us it'll be a fully formed game.

Could Tribes Make a Return?

Back in 1998, Dynamix released one of the most influential games for the PC, Starsiege: Tribes. The game was followed by Tribes 2 in 2002, then Tribes: Vengeance in 2004. While Vengeance was the last game in the Tribes franchise, it wasn't necessarily the last Tribes-like game from the developers, and it might not be the last Tribes game we see.

Holy smokes, I have'nt played Tribes 2 in a Loooooooooooong time. I think I still have that game around somewhere, and the OST it came with. I don't know if it would run (right) on my current computer.

Great game, but I don't see another one coming out.

You might wanna take a look at this if you're interested in playing T2 again.

I hope so.

Of course, people will call it a Halo clone. Lol.

Halo owes a LOT to Tribes.

Gamer_Z5221d ago

oh wow Tribes that takes me back. man i hope they bring this franchise back, Tribes was awesome.

Must admit I haven't been following garage games at all so I didn't know the details about Legions and Play Tribes.

Tribes 2 was not nearly as bad as some of the reception it got from hardcore fans, it was much better than vengeance. As a old frequent forum member at tribalwar I had the chance to see some of the devs talking about things.

They all seemed content with making these casual, low cost games. I don't particularly have an interest in playing them. This could perhaps mark a turnaround. With things like Steam and with their engine and knowledge AND the Tribes IP it does sound likely that maybe we will see a digital full game release from them.

I hope it's a true Tribes 3. That would make my decade.

Will the web browser replace the game console?

GameCritics.com says: Imagine a world where if you wanted to play Call of Duty 4 or World of Warcraft, you didn't need to own an Xbox 360 or you didn't need to buy a PC game and install it on your desktop and worry about DRM rights afterwards. For gamers who grew up on Nintendo this may sound like hard thing to grasp, but that's what Shana Fisher of InstantAction was proposing in her keynote speech yesterday at Web 2.0 Expo at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City."

Imagine a world where if you wanted to play Call of Duty 4 or World of Warcraft, you didn’t need to own an Xbox 360 or you didn’t need to buy a PC game and install it on your desktop and worry about DRM rights afterwards. For gamers who grew up on Nintendo this may sound like hard thing to grasp, but that’s what Shana Fisher of InstantAction was proposing in her keynote speech yesterday at Web 2.0 Expo at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

Ms. Fisher argued that with the rising cost in developing graphic intensive experiences, archaically inefficient distribution systems and a high chance of failure, the console game business is ripe for disruption. Enter InstantAction (currently in beta) who want to deliver triple-A original IP offerings of the usual FPS, RTS and MMO genre titles that hardcore gamers regularly consume—all through the convenience of a Web browser that requires no installation and with virtual zero load time.During the keynote speech, Ms. Fisher presented a trailer of their currently most popular title, Fallen Empire Legions, to prove InstantAction’s commitment to high-quality production values wasn’t lip service and then proceeded to demonstrate in real-time how quickly games load up and how easily one can switch from one title to another to show the technology described wasn’t vaporware.

So assuming InstantAction can deliver on their promise of delivering the kinds of titles that hardcore gamers want, will the browser make the game console obsolete? What do you think? and they had a video of a ok looking fps

i personally don't see it because you are dependent on the internet.
example: there are 20 million xbox 360s and 12 million of those are hooked in to xbox live. would those 8 million gamers just be cut off?

MS AND X360 WILL BE DEAD TOO

who left the door to the openzone well open.

I think this could be a great tool for small tme developers even though this company is suggesting its going more big budget than anything. I would just hate to sit through a comercial to play a game then one in like 30 minutes or something. Just wondering how much ad rev they are going to get or use. Then again they didnt say this service was going to be free. Guess we can wait and see.

TheIneffableBob5688d ago

I could see this happening.

I mean, it's already proven that there is a huge, huge market for games like these. Just look at, say, Runescape--that game runs from within a browser and has millions of players. The market seems to be converging towards simpler, more accessible games, so the web browser game market could explode soon.

Sprudling5688d ago

But that's not the same as replacing.

poeo5687d ago (Edited 5687d ago )

god i hope not.. i like to have a physical games console, and physical games. call me weird.
