How Microsoft can fix their image

It will be an interesting few months leading up to the November launch of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Sony is in the driver’s seat right now, with Microsoft being dragged by the car Sony is driving. If Microsoft plays its cards correctly, they can turn this PR nightmare around. Unfortunately I have a feeling Microsoft will rest on their laurels and expect people to flock to the Xbox One just because of the name, and it could be Microsoft’s biggest mistake this generation. Disable Kinect so that it doesn't need to be plugged in.

First, get rid of the confusing and unneeded DRM policies for physical copies of games. Instead make digital distribution more attractive through earlier releases and lower prices. By making digital distribution attractive it will become the primary market for games, making the online requirement and 24 hour check-ins become unneccesary. Second, make Kinect an option that can be unplugged and release a lower priced sku without Kinect. Third, admit you were wrong and apologize to your core fan base.

Actually talking to us and explaining everything would help. Or they should just make the actual sequal to the 360; a console aimed at gamers, not this wider, harder-to-capture market.

They have been honest from the begining about their plan to "take over the living room" since before the original xbox launch. Their plan was never to be a hardcore gaming device, that happened on the 360 by accident. They have finally created a device that is always connected (like smartphones) and can serve as a hub for skype/phone/television/blueray /dvd/indie games/AAA Games/streaming music/internet surfing/netflix/hulu/etc.

As much as I hate to admit it, gaming is slowly ushering in towards always online. I think back to games like Dark Souls...when I played it "offline" the world felt empty and like something was missing. The problem with microsoft is that they are way too early to the party. Consumers aren't quite ready for the always online experience...but it is coming people, and in time we will look back on non-connected gaming with nostalgia but nothing more. I have a feeling in the future, we will be saying things like "That x-box one was ahead of its time, that is why it failed"
