Nintendo CEO blames poor Wii U sales on company’s own subpar games

Sales of Nintendo’s Wii U console have been calamitously bad so far but the company’s CEO isn’t about to start blaming the rise of mobile games. Instead, AllThingsD reports that Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata thinks that the Wii U has sold poorly because Nintendo isn’t providing gamers with enough top-notch titles to draw them to the system.

DJMarty3959d ago

I'd blame, poor hardware, poor specs, too pricey, lack of descent games.

BosSSyndrome3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

And when has poor hardware EVER resulted in poor sales? Wii? PS2? PS1? 3DS? DS?
Do better specs means better sales? PSP? Vita? PS3? Xbox original?
Edit: @Gigaguy777 I didn't mean they were bad, but they were not as powerful as the competition. N64 had twice the power of PS1, PS2 was weakest, and obviously Vita is stronger than 3DS.

flipflopfacts3959d ago

I think it's more of poor innovation. People were looking for the next big thing and Nintendo underdelivered.

Gigaguy7773959d ago

PS2 and PS1 were good hardware-wise when they came out, and so is the 3DS.
Plus, better specs can make the difference between good sales and great sales.

Funny u never mention the 360 just saying

DJMarty3959d ago

N64, GAMECUBE,SATURN, DREAMCAST, VIRTUAL BOY,XBOX, 3DO, JAGUAR, CDI, CD32. Shall I go on.

PS1, PS2 never had poor hardware.

what will happen to wii u when xbox one and ps4 release?

Shnazzyone3958d ago

no games, hardware is fine. its overclocked video card more than makes up for the still better than ps3 ram and processor. It's nintendo making hd games. it'll be fine. plus as an owner of the console i'll say, The tablet controller is a great feature. Plus the system supports all my wii peripherals. including classic controller pro and the tatsunoko vs capcom fightstick is sick for injustice btw. Does need a price cut though. I wouldn't be surprised if that pops up at the end of the year, in time for christmas.

The title is misleading.

"The reason why the Wii U has lost the momentum it had during the launch period has something to do with the fact that Nintendo hasn’t been able to provide a strong software lineup, one game after the other, without too many intervals"

He's not saying the games are subpar, but the actual size of the library is insufficient. And frankly he's right. THIS is something Nintendo absolutely needs to rectify before too long.

That-Guy3959d ago

Exactly. I believe he commented not to recently on the slow production rate of first party titles, saying they've been too careful and need to be speedier.

If Nintendo wants to regain a substantial audience as it had with the Wii it should be pushing to deliver this holiday season. Unfortunately most of the recently announced console-moving titles are coming in 2014 which isn't doing the company justice.

MrSwankSinatra3959d ago

Star Fox. thats all nintendo needs to drop and they've sold me on a wii u.

TheEvilWithin3959d ago

I also think it comes from ALOT of people stating things they THINK they know about the Wii U but have not actually picked one up and played it. I went to Toys R US when the Wii U came out and they had it shoved in the back where no could see it or even try it but once people picked it up and played it they LOVED IT... WHO WOULD THINK??? I think retail people ALSO need to try harder to sell the Wii U instead of pointing them to everything else in the store.

BATRA3959d ago

BATTALION WARS 3 AND STAR FOX SHOULD COME FIST THEN KONG GAME AND OTHER MARIO 3D GAME THEN YOU MAY SEE SOMETHING THEN

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on
