Let’s All Stop Overreacting About Next-Gen Consoles

Kyle Orr from Pixel Related writes:

"Coming out of E3 the entire conversation seems to be focused on the renewal of the great console war between Microsoft and Sony. Based off of the reactions and comments in social media you would think that Sony has already won the next generation and Microsoft should just pack up their stuff and not even bother. It’s surprising to see such a one-sided battle.

I think most people are incredibly overreacting to stuff that has happened at E3 and that this upcoming generation is going to be a lot closer between the two than you might think. Here’s a couple reasons why:"

I don't think people are over reacting at all. I think the reaction against M$ is entirely justified. Don't be such a fanboy to blindly allow your consumer rights to get exploited.

How can you say that "Microsofts policies aren't changing anything"? You are either a completely willfully ignorant fanboy, or you're on of MS lackeys.

Then try to argue from the position of "Sony's problems during this gen". Do you consider how Sony staterd this Gen, and compare it to where they have now ended up, practically ahead of M$ in every corner?

Yep, definately a willfully ignorant xbox fanboy, & just another M$ lackey.

^This.

I can't believe how some people can belittle the seriousness of what Microsoft is doing - It's insulting really.

dcbronco1645d ago

Very distressing. 300 MS already lost articles a day warms the heart though.

hellvaguy1645d ago

Or paid online and used games online fees. Stop being sony hypocrites with double standards.

WiiU is the only system that isn't bending you over with all these fess.

Hicken1645d ago

I've noticed: you don't really try to argue that what Microsoft is doing isn't wrong. Rather, you try to bring Sony down to the same level.

Stop. It's not even close.

HammadTheBeast1645d ago

Yeah we all know how the Wii U is doing ... O_O

What's the last new game you played?

Oh wait, couldn't hear you over BF4 and all other multiplats.

"I've noticed: you don't really try to argue that what Microsoft is doing isn't wrong. Rather, you try to bring Sony down to the same level."

Good observation. I don't like what MS is doing nor Sony. But N4G is 95% sony backers so was just make that counterpoint. Imo, the lesser of 2 evils (sony vs ms), is still evil.

But ya WiiU graphics and multiplats gunna be subpar, so that's not a perfect solution either.

Those people are overreacting. /s

You mean a Facebook poll posted on every gaming site and forum over and over again, at a time when people are annoyed about the Xbox One, might be a little biased?

I don't think that's an indicator of anything except that A\ People are annoyed because, mostly, B\ Microsoft's PR and inability to clarify has screwed them over. I don't need a poll to tell me either thing.

Hicken1645d ago

Because people won't be less annoyed at all the crap the XBOne does later?

Clarified, the XBOne is just as bad as before it was clarified. It STILL requires online to be more than a brick, and MS "clarifying" isn't gonna change that.

JoeReno1645d ago

But they have made all the clarification that they are going to, and it still sucks. People are still going to pass on this console, because there is a better option out there with less restrictions, better price tag, and just as many good games. I know at least 5 die hard xboxs fans that are jumping ship and moving over to playnation, because they do not like a lot of things about this new system. So yeah, people are mad, but thats not going to change unless the suits at MS change all the restrictions on the One.

@JoeReno @Hicken

It must be great to have awesome reading comprehension. Or at least to be so angry over a piece of technology you're not going to buy that you can't see I'm questioning the source, not the motivation.

I saw another poll the other day that was calling it 35% to 65% in PS4's favour and it wasn't being linked places where people were saying "lol, vote it down!!" That, at least in terms of bias, seemed far more accurate.

@Hicken

"It STILL requires online to be more than a brick"

It requires a single, minuscule connection (it takes you more to receive an email) 24 hours since the last time it connected. I'm not defending the practise, but, yes, clarification would have helped in this case. Some people still think it requires always-online (people I've had to correct who work in the press, no less) and others don't realize they won't even notice it happening, even on the crappiest connections.

If you're not going to buy, don't buy, but base that decision on the facts. Unfortunately, it's MS's fault that they didn't get those facts out from the get go and allowed people to get the wrong idea, even back in March/April, after the leaks. Whatever general reaction was or will be, there's a huge PR issue here on top of it.

Hicken1645d ago

To be honest, it doesn't matter whether it's a "miniscule" connection or an hour-long authentication. It's REQUIRED, and it shouldn't be. The extent of the connection is semantics, really.

Where is this other poll of yours? Was it done by the same source? Can things not change in a matter of a day or two, since information travels so quickly these days? And why, pray tell, aren't you questioning that source, instead?

matgrowcott1645d ago (Edited 1645d ago )

@hicken

"To be honest, it doesn't matter whether it's a "miniscule" connection or an hour-long authentication. It's REQUIRED, and it shouldn't be. The extent of the connection is semantics, really."

Really? You're going to "correct" my spelling?

Take a read of this, and look things up before you speak in the future: http://grammarist.com/spell...

Plenty of devices require check-ins and connections for authentication. The problem is, a minuscule amount of data as part of a regular check-in negates a lot of the more specific complaints. That linked with Microsoft's confirmation that they could release codes so that people in extreme situations - in the army, for instance - can play offline, negates almost every complaint except for "they're doing it."

That's a valid complaint, don't get me wrong.

What should and shouldn't be, though... Well, if you feel you're in a place to make that call, good for you.

"Where is this other poll of yours? Was it done by the same source? Can things not change in a matter of a day or two, since information travels so quickly these days? And why, pray tell, aren't you questioning that source, instead?"

I'm not going to spend time searching my history for it and a Google search only offers stories on the Amazon and Gamespot poll.

And that's the problem. The Amazon Poll got too big in the wrong areas to give a fair look at the situation. The difference here is that there's an obvious confirmation bias. The poll that had only 3000 users might not be super accurate, but it's more accurate than the Amazon poll, which got plastered around sites like N4G as "Look! XBOX IS LOSING!"

Everybody had a jolly good laugh and sites like Reddit and 4Chan voted on mass.

If you want a better source, take a look at pre-orders. When they're at 17:1 in Sony's favour, I'll start to think the Amazon poll is valid.

dcbronco1645d ago

Hicken doesn't understand not to argue with someone that actually uses their brain. He prefers to live it his own world were that brain connection isn't required. He also hates the idea of that always on connection.

No let's not. If we don't react to things that we don't want then companies will impose bullshit on us.

Godmars2901645d ago (Edited 1645d ago )

Depends.

Are you about to ask/tell me to buy an XBO?

How about just accepting that I wasn't ever getting one in the first place?

Nothing personal. Honestly I'm waiting for Monolith's game for the WiiU to get a WiiU.
