Welcome to the Open World Generation

The next generation of consoles brings the open world with it. (E3, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, PS4, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Xbox One)

:/ I have more racing games in my steam selection right now.

Dirt 1/2/3
F1 2010/11/12
Flatout 1/23/UC
GRID 1/2
GTR 2
NFS Shift/Hot Pursuit
Race 07 + all expansions
Race Inejection
TDU 1/2
Xpand Rally

This doesn't include my sims outside of steam.

Not saying that there aren't alot of great racing games coming out, but I'd hardly call it the racing generation.

I really hope so this gen was all shooters and i feel open world games can do so much more. since you can have so many different type of open worlds with different environments and characters.
snipab8t  +   552d ago
Couldn't be happier. The current gen was dominated by first person shooters as open world games were limited by hardware. Next gen gonna be sick.
yugovega  +   552d ago
red dead remdemption
gta4
gta5
saints row
elders scrolls
lego games

proved it wasn't the hardware holding it back, it was developers being lazy and rehashing shooters.
snipab8t  +   552d ago
Yeah you are right in that respect. Rockstar Games and Bethesda were the exceptions and is why they are my favorite developers. Saints row and lego games were pretty tacky though so I don't really hold them in high regard.

i sure hope not. i really do prefer a more focused and linear style in both gameplay and story, mostly story but open world gameplay can be a annoying sometimes too. I like how LA Noire did by giving you the option.
bjmartynhak  +   552d ago
I often lose the focus in open world games doing side quests or just having fun around... and then it gets boring and I don't care more about the story.

Linear doesn't mean bad at all in my opinion.

I couldn't have said it better. I lose interest in most open world games. It has to be done to near perfection to keep me interested. I'm not a fan of exploring. I'd rather be doing stuff than running around looking for stuff that in most cases do little to nothing.

I think open world is being implemented into all these different genres some way or another. Count me in!
KumquatGOATBEEF  +   552d ago
I have nothing to complain about that. I believe open world games provide more replayability and makes me feel in control of the story and how fast it progresses.
SonyPS4  +   552d ago
Love me some open worlds. Less linear 5-8 hour shooters, more everything to even the genres out please.
Spontogical  +   552d ago
Sometimes it's good to have a break from all the dudebro shooters.
Mroc13  +   552d ago
Open world was big since ps2. Dont see what the big deal is here. Shooters will still be the biggest thing next gen

I'd say this gen also has been the gen of open-world games. Thank god it wasn't just the gen of FPS (even though there were many more than sandbox games):
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
Just Cause 2
GTA IV
GTA V
Red Dead Redemption
Burnout Paradise
Fallout 3
Fallout Vegas
Far Cry 2
Far Cry 3
Assassin's Creed 1, 2, Brotherhood, Revelations, 3, 4 Black Flag
Yakuza 3, 4, Dead Souls, 5
Mafia II
Dead Island
Ratchet & Clank a Crack in Time and
Bioshock 1, 2, and Infinite to a lesser extent

Feel free to add more if you know some good!
saint_seya  +   552d ago
Infamous 1 and 2.
N7Lukas  +   552d ago
I hope so, as its my favourite genre.
Belking  +   552d ago
MGS 5 will be awesome on xbox one...Can't wait.
tigertron  +   552d ago
I think we'll definitely be seeing more open world games, particularly on the PS4 due to the 8GB RAM.
blackpanther25  +   552d ago
Why do I feel like it could have been a lot of "real" open world games last gen if the x360 used HD DVD like they were supposed to or use supported blu-ray.
r21  +   552d ago
Watch_Dogs, AC4, MGS V, InFamous: Second Son *drools*
Lord-choas  +   552d ago
While I like open world games like Assassin's creed and Skyrim. not every game have to be an open world game.
