PlayStation 4 Online Multiplayer Fee Will be Used to Fund Improvements writes:

"Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has promised that the surprise decision to charge for online multiplayer with PlayStation 4 is not a money-grabbing scheme and the money gained from it will be reinvested into the system to fund improvements.

When CVG asked him about the decision he replied, ”That’s [was] a big decision, what we internally discussed and decided is that we will continue the free access to online play on PS3 and Vita, so that’s clear. But because on PS4 the online connectivity features such as second screen, auto downloads and share features – these are one big pillar of the PS4 experience and we will continue to invest in this area to expand and improve these online features and services."

The story is too old to be commented.

We need dedicated servers for all big multiplayer games.

Abash1644d ago

I'm fine with PS+ being required for online, the way I see it Im getting way more back with the content PS+ gives than I am spending on online

Ghost_of_Tsushima1644d ago (Edited 1644d ago )

I completely agree but they still need dedicated servers for multiplayer gaming.

Apologies in advance for my repost of said statement, however this article correlates directly to my previous statement made
The hypocrisy on these forums in regards to this "Pay for play"subject is so thick it makes it almost impossible to breathe really. I find myself pondering if I have somehow fallen into some sort of alternate universe whereas all playstation fans are suddenly adamantly supporting, and even complimenting the exact same, I repeat the exact same policy they called unjustifiable for countless years previous. Suddenly the demonized process of Microsoft charging to play online is praised like the second coming itself? Flabbergasted would be putting it mildly in terms of my current amazement towards the flip flopping masses that "ok" this policy in their minds because "if sony does it, it's A OK with me". Can someone please give me a legitimate reason it is now acceptable to pay to play online now?

So, you are pretty much saying you are spamming?

Godmars2901642d ago (Edited 1642d ago )

@Abash: its not for online, but multiplayer. You wont need PS+ to access Netflix.

That goes double for you 360degrees. That has always been the argument.

Mikelarry1642d ago

@360: personally i find it ok because sony has included this with the psplus subscription which offers me value. i am not paying anymore than i already currently pay for my psplus.

i get free games

i get discounted prices on games

ms on the other hand paying for xboxlive never offered me any value for my subscription other than allowing me to play multi-player. hopefully that gives you some idea why some users are ok with paying for online

jdktech20101642d ago

360degress is obviously a fanboy but let me chime in as someone who has paid for XboxLive for 6 years and just paid for PS+ last year (and reupped).

PS+ is the better deal by far in terms of value per dollar since this month alone PS+ gets Deus Ex: HR, Saints Row 3, Uncharted 3 Singleplayer, X:COM Enemy Unknown, and LBP Karting (ok, not htat great).

Xbox live supposed gracious gift to the consumers is a +4 year old Halo 3 and AC2 games. You'll get two new games every month until November when they stop the service (could continue on possibly).

It's really a no brainer as far as value. I have loved Xbox Live on 360 and thought it was worth it but PS+ is on a whole nother level of worth it.

VonBraunschweigg1642d ago (Edited 1642d ago )

@360 degrees

Most of us accept it now because we simply have to if we want to play online on PlayStation (besides FTP games), and because we're not going to be paying just for online gaming but we get a lot of games during the subscription - for me DriveClub pretty much covers the first year - and finally because we genuinly believe they are going to improve things overall and with a relatively cheap PS4 the money has to come from somewhere.

From me for sure, and if I don't want to pay for online multiplayer there's even more online multiplayer with Warframe, DC online and PlanetSide 2.

Sony: "$50 a year will get you an amazing popeye's chicken combo package with 30 wings, 35 pieces of chicken! 10 pops! 5lbs of potato wedges, 3 lbs. of coleslaw, veggie sticks and 2lb. of mint for that nasty after breathe!!"

MS: "$59 a year will get you 30 pieces of chicken. that's it. Deal with it... and No sharing your friends and family!! they gotta buy their own package deal... and for a limited time we will throw in a mint for you;-)". one.

MysticStrummer1642d ago

@360 - There's lots of hypocrisy from both sides. Pretending otherwise makes you a true fanboy. Since you're copying and pasting a previous response to this topic, so will I.

I'm usually great at justifying things I want to do or buy, but I've had to give quite a bit of thought to this topic. I'll be getting PS+ with my PS4 because:

1) I've bought a lot of downloadable titles that would have been included or discounted with a PS+ membership.

2) I was planning on buying Drive Club, maybe not on day one but eventually, and it will be included with PS+.

3) I enjoy taking part in betas and PS+ members get in sooner.

4) While I still don't care about cross game chat, I like the idea of using some of the other PS4 social features with my little brothers and friends, particularly sharing videos of awesome gaming moments.

5) I usually buy most of the games I really want right away, but if a game I already bought becomes free on PS+ I can always trade in my disc copy toward something else. Also, many games I didn't buy but wanted to try have been included through PS+.

6) I see myself taking advantage of the full game trials quite a bit.

I feel like I'm forgetting something... but I'm on some painkillers because of oral surgery so that's all I can remember at the moment. lol

As for the hang up some people seem to have about using the word "free" with PS+, just use the word "included" instead.

abzdine1642d ago (Edited 1642d ago )

Sony!!!! Take my money

Greatness awaits

Mikelarry1642d ago

@ mystic your point 5. i never really thought about it like that boy have you given me a good idea. all this time i see games i already own copies of come on psplus and i just ignore them. thanks buddy. this is not a sarcastic comment i am being really honest

AAACE51642d ago

What would be better is to keep it free for those like myself who just want the same online experience I get on Ps3 with newer games. And then charge a fee for those who want all that extra BS.

I hate being bothered during a game anyway, so I do not look forward to more interruptions while playing!

I'm still not a big fan of this connected generation. Which is tricking us into giving up more of our freedoms by making us think all these new innovations are innocent!

shoddy1642d ago

This is why it worth investing in Sony.
they might make little profit but they spend thier money to better service thier customers.

Unlike other companies just focusing on how to make the most profit out if thier customers.

i just want to let every one know i just came back from gamestop.
i got "the last of us" and placed a deposit on the PlayStation4!!! hahahaha....

Docknoss1642d ago

Wow samething MS has done forever, and Sony Fans have rediculed Xbox fans for. Double standard Irony

vigilante_man1641d ago

PS Vita & PS3 remain free so no double standards. Can you use other network features on 360 without subscription such as netflix, lovefilm, free to play games etc? NO.

But you can on the PS4. This is fair to the consumer. Buy single player games, use our media & internet for free. Only pay for the new extra services we will offer such as Share, Cloud streaming for games, etc.

I DID get PS+ just over a year ago. I do not know how Sony have done it but I have never got such value for money on any purchase before. So many games and then included the PS Vita for same subscription. And now includes PS4 all for the same.

If you ARE going to charge a subscription then this is the way to do it. Please tell me which one offers the best value for money..

ZodTheRipper1643d ago

Of course it will, who would've thought different? It affects only PS4 multiplayer and not even every game.
And since PS+ is such a good deal everyone should subscribe by default.

theWB271642d ago

Live wouldn't have grown the way it has without investing further into it. Sony is stating things that is pretty universal and getting praise off it. It's bonkers...

Reborn1642d ago (Edited 1642d ago )

How is providing clarity on a big decision, "bonkers"?

I'm sure by now everyone appreciates the clear responses.

rezzah1642d ago (Edited 1642d ago )

So how much will the price be per year/month?

I wouldn't mind having a second option. No PSN+, but a lesser price for only MP access per year.

PSN+ is nice, but I don't spend (save) enough or play everything that is free to make up for the $50 subscription fee. I don't need +.

So a payment for yearly access would be great.

Mikelarry1642d ago

in the us its $49.99

in the uk its £39.99

Virtual_Reality1642d ago

People are not going crazy with the PS+ service. Knowing that you can get more $ in content than paying for it.

What does one full year of PlayStation Plus look like?

jdktech20101642d ago

Where's the list of free xbox live games?

Nm....that about covers it. Maybe Doritos game or something.

xDHAV0K24x1641d ago

Ps+ games are rentals...HUGE difference
