CNET: Why Xbox One and PS4 may be the final generation of consoles

Based on the cheers and jeers coming out of this week's E3 video game trade show about the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, you'd think we were about to enter a new era of cutting-edge game machines, complete with a new arms race of processors, GPUs, and other features. But if you look at how media consumption has changed rapidly over the past several years, and more importantly, how the hardware used to consume said media has also changed, that may not be the case at all. (PS4, Xbox One)

Nahh I dont think so.

Next thing they will say is cell phones killed the consoles

CNET? Hmm won't even click it.
o.O
mikeslemonade  +   394d ago
They're giving too much credit to casual gamers to know how to build a PC. There's always gonna be a market for a game platform that you just plug and play.

Speaking of which, in a CNET interview, Jack Tretton did a great job at explaining how smartphone and tablet games actually HELP console gaming.

You'd think after having a chat with a guy like Jack these guys would wise up.

At the current rate tablets will be more powerful than the ps4/xbone before this generation is over.

CNET doesn't like that Microsoft's console is at a disadvantage.
Oh well, it's not like I didn't see that coming, given their history.
Upbeat  +   394d ago
Is if farrrr to much money to be made in the console industry for the next gen to be the last. Bit of common sense tells you that.
SoapShoes  +   394d ago
They're just upset Xbox isn't the next watercooler so they have to put doubt on it so it seems like it's not worth buying a Playstation.

Yeah, this gets said quite a bit. It's either Smart devices will take over, or consoles will cease to exists. Consoles will change over time, and what they become will change. Even the consoles of today are nothing like the NES, SNES, Saturn, PS2 days. But that doesn't change the fact that some form of console will be around for a very long time. Probably for the remainder of all our lives at least.

Well if this is the end. Sony will be going out with a bang.
Rusty515  +   394d ago
End it the way they started.
Majin-vegeta  +   395d ago
Maybe for M$ but not for Sony.
DxTrixterz  +   395d ago
With the way things are going I think and surely hope Xbox One will be last Xbox console and happily waiting for PS5 in about 10 years.
1nsomniac  +   394d ago
Give it up already!!

This new generation hasn't even began yet so it's completely impossible for anyone to tell whether it will be the last.

If anything, console sales are growing expedientialy year on year. Its already been claimed that this years E3 was the most viewed E3 ever! so it wouldn't make sense in anybody's world to make this the last generation!

consoles are making to much money to just stop after this gen. come on cnet think about it!!!

either way activision will keep making cod for consoles that arent being made... and people will still buy it.
Dogswithguns  +   394d ago
The console wars will kill the consoles..
PositiveEmotions  +   394d ago
Nope not true there will be a PS5 in like ten years from now :)
Mikelarry  +   394d ago
as long as consumers want a dedicated gaming machine console will always be available.
NegativeCreepWA  +   394d ago
While consoles will never go away, if cloud gaming takes off the way some seem too think it will, new hardware wont be needed.
iliimaster  +   394d ago
lol my god the best part about this crap is theres something called the internet where people can find out that someone is trying to sell a turd and pass it as a magic rock, this might be the last xbox but console ? come on cellphone game player nothing on a cell phone will outshine my ps4 or wii u on my 65" 1080p tv ! 240hrtz refresh rate@! u can keep ur candy crush or farmville ill take resistance 4! infamous second son red dead redemption 2 and i hope lost oddessy 2 :D
NotSoSilentBob  +   394d ago
The same thing was said for the 7th gen of Consoles(Xbox360, PS3, and WII) Yet here we are with the 8th Gen coming out in the next 6 months or less.
NameRemoved0017  +   394d ago
The problem is during this generation the average internet speed in the US is going to go up about 10x by the time this generation ends making game streaming to something like an apple TV or Roku seem more ethical than new consoles. Then if you actually want to run the game not stream it you will have to buy a PC with hardware capable of doing so.

The current consoles (so far) do not have 802.11ac so for now its safe to say it won't happen this gen but probably next gen.

People said the same thing at the start of Last Gen(7th). Especially now after PRISM came to the public eye cloud gaming/storage took a MAJOR step backwards.
webeblazing  +   394d ago
its crazy because im sure they re people out there that choose not to get broadband internet or use their neighbors

THat means its the last generation of hardcore gaming. I don't see that happeing. Sure casual gaming has a bigger market, but I don't think it will be the last
just-joe  +   394d ago
Who knows, if anything this will give Microsoft a bloody nose and something to think about.
ginsunuva  +   394d ago
Yeah it will. Cloud gaming will replace them after this gen.
strigoi814  +   394d ago
