PlayStation Camera to use Dedicated Port on PS4, Won’t Take up Precious USB Port

With the PlayStation 4 only sporting two USB ports, many didn’t want to get a PlayStation Camera (the new name for the PS4eye) simply because it would leave you with one port. - PSLS (E3, PS4)

Yes! Yeah, I didn't want to use up half my slots.

so...
that is what that USB looking port is for on the back.

Good to know.

As far as ports go on the front, i imagine Sony will release a hub accessory to add more. They have one already that works with the PS3. it's round though, I'd want one that matched the style of the PS4 but round would work too.

Yup, the port at the back. They call it an AUX port I believe.

And yes, hopefully they release a hub or at-least allow 3rd party hubs like PS3.

Precious USB Ports, they are like gold

Sad but true I hated when Sony went from 4 usb ports to 2 usb ports on newer ps3 models. I had to buy a usb splitter and I was using 4 ports on my ps3. Sometimes I had my keyboard/mouse 1-2 controllers usb and headset. Not sure how you can do all of that w/ 2 usb ports.
Relientk77  +   812d ago
Yea I had a fat PS3 that died, and then got a slimmer one, so I know first hand what it's like to lose those USB ports :-(
thehitman  +   812d ago
Same my original 60gig from launch died when I got KZ3 I started doing the motherboard trick but after 2-3 times of fixing the YLOD I had to bury it and get a slim.
sprinterboy  +   812d ago
I had a phat PS3 and I thought 4 was not needed dude, not trying to catch you out or anything but I have my PS3 (now slim) camera plugged in all the time and the other slot for my charger, I simply take the charger out when I plug in my GT wheel, its no biggy. To keep the cost down I think 95% of gamers are happy with 2 slots, just my opinion though. What did you use your 4 slots for on the phat ps3. Like I said not having a go or anything just wondering.

@sprinterboy

There are a large arrange of devices that you can plug into the PS3's usb port that might be hindered with only two. For you this wasnt a problem, but for some it is. To name a couple:
Mouse
Keyboard
Headset
Camera
Memory Stick

Most critically, I believe, are third-party controllers. Some cheaper PS3 controller altertives are wired and need to take up a usb slot at all times to function. If you need a backup controller incase a friend wants to play sometimes people opt to buy the significantly cheaper wired versions from a perpherial brand like Nyko rather than the more expensive official product.

Though I agree that inorder to keep cost low I'm fine with having only two. There are some fairly cheap accessories that you can buy for the consoles, typically, that will provide you with additional USB slots. Its probably cheaper buying a 10-15 dollar usb expansion peripheral then having to pay for those extra usb slots in the console.

Perfect, the dedicated port is at the back so it'll be nice and tidy. :)
Cryptcuzz  +   812d ago
Yeah I like that a lot.

I remember when playing Eye of Judgement back in the days with the PS3 Camera, I would have to disconnect it when done playing so the front of the PS3 doesn't look all messy.

I like my consoles nice and clean looking. I put them on their own pedestals!

when Sony said they spoke to developers i thought it was a marketing talk. but from everything i am seeing reported about ps4 they weren't kidding every thing about the ps4 just echoes thoughtfulness
Patm82  +   812d ago

Conzul  +   812d ago

My Pc had 8 usb 3.0 ports and 4 2.0 and I have slots open for more, you mad consoles.
GentlemenRUs  +   812d ago
Yet I have 2x 6 USB expanders plugged into my PS3.

;)

When you have a lot of things to charge and a lot of things to transfer stuff, That's when you need all these.

EDIT: In theory it's possible to use an expander on another expander expanding the USB infinite times! But the power cost would be too much.

so I could have 48 usb 3.0 ports, probably more if you bought better usb hubs, thats just a little overkill.
Snookies12  +   812d ago
Why do you feel the need to boast insignificant things? My PC has plenty of USB 3.0 ports as well, not like most people would have use for all of them though.

Seems like you came in here just to troll. This coming from a primarily PC gamer...

Holy shit man some of you guys try so hard it's not even funny, literally not humorous at all. You're gloating about USB ports. I feel bad for you.

its a sad day when pc gamers start boasting about usb ports

Sucks for me since I use a projector and need a 20ft. cord, doubt the cord on the camera is long enough. Hope they will sell an extension.
Droidanomix  +   812d ago
Okay, why not just have a usb camera and a third usb port? Don't know what the X1 Kinect/USB layout is but the same goes for them.
Belking  +   812d ago
That's no biggie. Kinect has a dedicated port too for xbox360s.

Yet another plus, perfectly designed
bub16  +   812d ago
does this plug in to the "AUX" hole on the back?
ziggurcat  +   812d ago
likely, yes.
bub16  +   812d ago
i answered my own question really. there are no other ports that would support a camera... i feel stupid lol
mediate-this  +   812d ago
Competition is fantastic. I feel as though Sony is really going through every fine detail, to make a beast of a system with a awesome experience. I didn't like having to use usb slot for playstation eye for ps3, problem solved for ps4.

good job sony

Well, it seems they thought of everything then.
