Can the PS4 Be Great for MMOs?

The PlayStation 4 is set to launch by the end of this year, and it's going to be quite the piece of hardware. But is it going to be a good fit for MMOs? Larry Liberty, executive producer of DC Universe Online, certainly thinks so. He recently told NowGamer: "I would expect that, with all of the amazing features that have been announced for the next PlayStation, that it will be a great platform for MMOs."

Is this a valid assessment of the console, or is he just blowing hot air because he knows SOE will be bringing DCUO (as well as PlanetSide 2) to the PS4 later this year? (PS4, Tag Invalid)

Some MMO's sure but not all. Just imagine trying to play something like WoW on a controller. Yes I'm aware PS4 probably supports mouse and KB but then that is more things the consumer has to buy (assuming they don't own them).

I saw last night the demo of Final Fantasy XIV Online for PS3, it have a redesigned UI compared to the PC.

The interaction with the NPC's and other stuff in the game are not complicated, but is a MMO done right in a console.

Watch it here:

It could be done there would be a way and if you are coding a game with the PS4 in mind then you would try to get round having a massive amount of keys to bind. I don't think you would want to attempt to put WoW on PS4 but future MMO's definatly

i for one wish for Marvel Heroes on PS4. that game needs a controller support more than microsoft needs new decision makers.

I'm pretty sure it will be a great machine for MMO next gen since sony's policy is more appealing for MMO developers.

Been waiting for this for a few years since my laptop is a bit pants and cant run anything :( least I would know that I get a gaming machine for a many years buying a PS4 and not just 1 or 2 years like if I made a gaming rig

You can very easily run guild wars 2 on consoles with that ui layout.

MMO's will definitely work for the ps4. I played dc universe online for the ps3 version for a whole year & the ps3 has a bigger fanbase then the pc version. I think it will only get better on the ps4 version & cool thing about it is the ps4 version will be able to play with the ps3 users who still enjoy it to this day.

I can see the ones that don't hide behind the PS+ pay wall being very successful. The MMO's that will do crappy will be the ones that require PS+(online MP) pay wall and then require a monthly fee. IF Sony really wants MMO's to be very successful they should not have a PS+ requirement for any of the MMO's

they've already said their free to play mmos, DCU online and Planetside 2 won't need Plus.

“As far as free-to-play games are concerned, it’s a publisher’s decision whether they put it inside or outside of the PlayStation Plus requirements,” he said.

The news came following word that Sony Online Entertainment’s two PlayStation 4 MMOs, DC Universe Online and Planetside 2, won’t require PlayStation Plus subscriptions.

no word on whether subscription mmos will need plus.
but hopefully they won't need it, if you're already paying a separate sub, you don't want to have to pay twice.

i can't see any reason a publisher would tie their free to play mmo to the plus sub, surely they'd want as many people as possible to be able to play.

I think that the online MP charge just wouldn't apply to MMOs TBH, and any that require plus will likely fail as ppl are not going to pay twice or pay for a F2P.

The Elder Scrolls Online should be pretty great. Not sure about other games.

If a game has dedicated servers I'm willing to pay for ps+,I've been paying for Xbox live for years and the only game that gave me dedicated severs was gears.sony is doing a fantastic job so far.

Yes of course and especially if they allow KB and mouse.

I think it would be great, except they need a much better keyboard accessory than the PS3 had. It was vastly inferior to the xbox one and I think when they do another one it needs to be below the controller not above it.

The Only MMO i ever played is Marvel Heroes. It tried WOW for about 10min and LOTR Online for about 15mn.

so i really only care abt Marvel Heroes, which i would love for it to be on PS4
