Ryse: Son of Rome looks to be sinking | Destructoid

Destructoid: "Microsoft likes Ryse: Son of Rome enough to put it in Monday's press conference. If my hands-on time was any indication of the final product, there's no reason to be so keen on it. Despite having only five minutes with the game, it didn't do much to impress." (Ryse: Son of Rome, Xbox One)

I think we all knew this game would be all graphics and sub par gameplay. There's way too much QTE's and slow mo takedowns.

Crytek games: Great presentation, subpar gameplay.
darthv72  +   776d ago
QTE kills
are more for the effect. you can continue to button mash if you like and you will still kill the bad guy.

when i play God of war, i dont always go for the 1 button kill. sometimes i like to just hack and slash. When the game gives you the option....just dont press that button and see what happens.

either you still kill the other guy or he counters and the battle continues till one of you is victorious.

Comparing GoW isnt really a good comparison. Ryse seems more grounded then GoW. I dont expect to see crazy combos being pulled off like every successful brawler can. Also that Resident Evil'esq camera angle seems like a horrible choice for a brawler. The combat thus far seems bland. Cryteks track record is looks first, and gameplay later.
Boody-Bandit  +   776d ago
When I saw Ryse I thought, nice looking game, a little choppy with the animations and when the camera pans, 1 hit with sword or shield leads instantly to QTE = rental. But than I reminded myself that there is no renting on the XBOX ONE. See MS this is why you should reconsider your position on DRM immediately.

They should've stuck to this remaining a Kinect game. Either way this game needs a ton more depth in play mechanics or it will sit and collect dust on store shelves until it's discounted considerably.

That's the way that Crytek games always are. Crytek earns most of their money with their engine not their games.
Blackdeath_663  +   776d ago
iot slows the game down and there is nothing i hate more than repeated animations. just makes the game monotonous
plaZeHD  +   776d ago
The game has a huge potential to be good. But the QTE and slo mo was a big deal breaker for me.

It's pretty much a quick time event game. Pass.
LordMaim  +   776d ago
The Xbox One's graphics make those Quicktime Events look fantastic.

Destructoid seems to be very biased, giving the MS the conference an F and the loads of bs that have come me out of that site recently. Take this with a big grain of salt, IGN, Giant bomb, and Gamespot said it plays very well.

Or maybe he just didn't like the game.....

Opinions, everybody has one.
Baka-akaB  +   776d ago
I found it ok , what kills me is how the same people who attacked games like quantic dream stuff (i've seen some around here) , for being qte heavy now loves it .

Or to not make it an exclusive game thing , those that completely trashed Asura's wrath for being a qte fest .
darx  +   776d ago
And how people who praised Quantic for their QTE games say this game sucks because it's a QTE fest.

I won't be buying, I try to avoid QTE games at all costs. Hate them!

That's if I purchase the XB1!

the reverse is true too . In both case , unless he remains consistent , someone can't bash either for that . The rest is liking the design the universe etc .

At least you you are honest , you just dont like qte games
kneon  +   776d ago
Not all QTE's are created equal. In Heavy Rain the QTE's were the right way to go. The majority of the QTE's were actually dialog choices. Sure they could have done something like Mass Effect but that just wouldn't have been right for this game. HR was about making decisions and living with the consequences so QTE's fit perfectly with that approach.
zebramocha  +   776d ago
@darx that's because hr isn't a qte, people who say this either didn't play the game or are stupid as the button press are contexual and yields different results depending on the scenario.
darx  +   776d ago
@zebra

Well Cage refers to it as QTE.
RM-TatoTiburon  +   776d ago
can't wait for this game

I'll be passing this game by , it's on a xbone.

one of the best looking games at E3 gotta see more gameplay

Lost me at:

"Despite having only five minutes with the game, it didn't do much to impress"

Judging a game after 5 minutes is never a good idea. It kills any credibility you have.
ComBaTs0uL  +   776d ago
People saying ps4 is alot more powerful than xbox one but I was more impressed with what microsoft showed than sony by a mile..
Pintheshadows  +   776d ago
Okay, if you really feel that way fine, but as a technical achievement Infamous Second Son is far more impressive. In fact The Division is as well and that is multiplatform. And Watchdogs.
ipe  +   776d ago
I excpect 65 on metacritic.

Same with killer instinct. I mean who asked for it? It was garbage before maybe itll be good who knows

game looked good ,butt gameplay needs some help
gino9  +   776d ago
Now this is some true fanboy shit. Im not even getting a Xb1 but to say this game looks bad is crazy. Did you see this game in motion in HD? The game looks great, then to compare screen shots of it to a fuckin tech demo. The fanboy hate on MS is getting old. If u don't like Microsoft why keep such a close watch on their games? If this was a PS4 game I bet every fanboy would be saying how good it looks. Since Microsoft is the devil right now every game they produce now becomes shit. Don't let their bad decisions as a company hurt your cred as a gamer by sounding and acting like an idiot. Unless your blind or a fanboy you can obviously see there's nothing last-gen about this games graphics. Gameplay is another story, but if you paid attention you would see QTE's being avoided plenty of times too. There were times the prompt came up and the player didn't execute the move.
TheGrimReaper  +   776d ago
"Ryse also seems to be very unimaginative in its structure. The demo consistently bottlenecked the player into the next narrow setting to engage the enemies in a completely pre-determined way. Maybe this was just for the purpose of the demo, but it feels as if the game could utterly negate any freedom that the player has. "

Being a former Kinect exclusive might have hurt the gameplay :/
